...the hell? "The Redd & White Stripes"?

Apparently Redd Kross' Steven McDonald (with a green light from Jack White) has begun posting MP3s of songs from White Blood Cells with an overdubbed bass. This is either a fascinating reworking of an album that's gradually staggering its way to canonical status, or the most pointless thing ever.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't heard any of the MP3s yet (apparently the file server is constipated or something), but when I do I'll weigh in further.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you sure the original album might not be the most pointless thing ever as well?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ive dl some of them. they're not that great, but mildly amusing. good for one listen anyway? does anyone have the first two??? id like to get them

Ron, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's NOT, Ned. SHUT UP

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The album cover tweak is amusing, but it's sort've pointless beyond that.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, this reworking of "The Union Forever" is laughable. The only time I can tell a noticeable difference is during that "There is a man..." segment, and it's miles better when it's just voice and drumsticks. The bass does NOT work there, sorry.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's probably not as pointless as this!

Jody Beth Rosen, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's NOT, Ned. SHUT UP

hooray for intellectual discourse!

...is too.

Dave M., Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck intellectual discourse I did not feel as though Ned's remark necessitated any sort of response that could be construed as intellectual. Thank you.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CLAAAAAAASSSSSSSIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCC!!!!! Not that I can tell the difference or anthing.

Personally I prefer the theme song to Bitchin' Ass.

Arthur, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The original is "gradually staggering its way" to the bin marked "briefly fashionable old cock that nobody in their right minds now want"...

Andrew L, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's NOT A CHISELED-IN-STONE FACT BUT YOUR OWN OPINION, SO THERE.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that is so incredibly lame. . .such an embarrasingly obvious attempt by a has-been (if he ever was) to hitch his wagon to the flavor of the month (yeah, mixed metaphor, i know).

drake, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Never-was": Actually "Linda Blair" fucking rules.
"Flavor of the month": Oh pls.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe weird al can get in on this and add accordion.

drake, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Flavor of the month": Oh pls.

Nate, you can't deny that the White Stripes are super-trendy HOTT at the moment - they are the 'flavor of the month' if anything is. Whether that'll fade away or turn into lasting interest and respect isn't relevant, really.

Tom, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always figured FotM was sort of a curt "they won't last" dismissaal. They've also been HOTT for, what, a year or so? It's not like they're the Vines or something.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i referred to them as "flavor of the month" because although "white blood cells" has been out for quite awhile and received all kinds of acclaim, it's just recently that i've seen them on tv, heard them on the local corporate-alternative radio station, and surprisingly found the jewel case in the car of a friend who buys about one cd a month and it's usually creed. so, having said that, now i'm more interested in other artists jumping in and augmenting the album. i'm thinking that after weird al, maybe bez can re-re-release it. it'll be exactly the same except you can occasionally hear him jumping around.

drake, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rad! It'll be just like the Gallagher "Devil's Haircut" remix!

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The new reissues of his first two solo albums, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman have not only been remixed, but re-recorded, replacing the bass and drums from the original recordings with new, shockingly inferior performances from Ozzy's current touring bassist and drummer. These are two albums widely regarded as classics in the metal genre, albums fans have held near to their hearts for the past 20 years, and they have been tampered with. Tainted. Imagine if Jimmy Page replaced John Bonham's drumming on Led Zeppelin IV. Or if a studio hack replaced Johnny Marr's guitar work on The Smiths' The Queen is Dead. Or an Abbey Road minus Paul's bass, George's guitar solos, or even Ringo's classic drum fills. Why, in the name of all that's holy, would Ozzy do this?
Arrrgh. Ozzy is now officially on my Shitlist.

Lord Custos III, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this is Rock N Roll Bootlegging (see also: Rocket From The Crypt's "cover" of Chantilly Lace where they play and sing over the original, at times literally creating a dialogue with the Big Bopper) - adding new parts to existing recordings & treating songs like collage elements.

and more generally it's exactly the right approach to a flavour of the month: to tweak it, poke it, make fun of it = to use it like chuck d said as a mineral. this is the approach that keeps jamaican music vital - when everybody takes a kick at the flavour of the month (recording new songs w/ the same riddim, answer songs, covers, parodies), same with louie louie from richard berry to sandpipers to black flag to maytals, etc. etc. handwaving etc.

fritz, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in my posy, this = redd & white stripes, not ozzy (though i don't see why anyone would get mad about ozzy's bassist & drummer's vanity project unless they were destroying all the copies of the original one too)

fritz, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did the guy who ran a Menswear mailing list just write that White Blood Cells was pointless?

dan, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that is so incredibly lame. . .such an embarrasingly obvious attempt by a has-been (if he ever was) to hitch his wagon to the flavor of the month (yeah, mixed metaphor, i know).

I doubt the McDonalds would go out of their way to publicize this... Knowing what they're like, I'm sure they did this mainly because they really like the White Stripes... They salute their heroes in strange but amiable ways... whether it's Shonen Knife or the Kelly Family

On the other hand, apparently White Stripes and Sympathy For The Record Industry are allegedly in a lawsuit right now, and I figure Redd Kross have to be friends with Long Gone John and Sympathy... hmmmmmmmm.....naaaaaaaaaah!

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did the guy who ran a Menswear mailing list just write that White Blood Cells was pointless?

If you're referring to me, I have in fact never run a Menswear mailing list. That might have been fun, though. ;-)

Also, I suggest you read my comment a little more carefully.
