Right, world cup limited to pop music (not classical or jazz unless they made it into popular consciousness) and between jan 1st : 1970 and Dec 31st 1979.

We need 16 countries. I suggest

a) UK, Germany, Nigeria, Argentina,

b) France, US, Brazil, Egypt

c) Mexico, Spain, Canada, Jamaica,

d) Indonesia, Russia, India, Scotland

Suggestions for replacements accepted is good reasons are given. Then which two from each group go through to next round? Why?

Appreciate inclusion of Egypt, but I'd say Egyptian pop was already in decline in the 70's. Lebanon might be a better choice, but the civil war which started in "75 presumably had adverse effects on the music industry.

This is completely rigged, due to the UK, Germany, and Nigeria being in the same bracket. You're worse than FIFA... bastard!

Based on my vast ignorance, I'd say that the U.S. wins the 70s.

Andrew : please feel free to re-order.

I'm hoping for a Scotland vs UK final.

De Ray ... you're jumping the gun.

Based on my CD collection, and total non-interest in punk, it'd have to be a Germany (Krautrock / Kraftwerk) - Jamaica (reggae / Lee "scratch" Perry) final.

I feel very ignorant of a sudden - who is all this great 70s pop music from Indonesia, Russia and Spain by?

zebedee, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil, sorry, sorry. But we have more bombs, does that count?

Any other suggestions for a replacement for Egypt?

Phil, sorry, sorry. But we have more bombs, does that count?

Any other suggestions for a replacement for Egypt? How about S. Africa then?

DeRayMi, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil sorry but I meant to cancel that.

DeRayMi, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"You people" sure love your Krautrock. I think it's good but not that good.

DeRayMi, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Should we do a different thread for each group then?
