Hans Reichel RFI, S/D

I admit that I posted the Pigface question partly out of boredom, but I really am interested in hearing more Hans Reichel. I just acquired "The Death of the Rare Bird Ymir/Bonobo Beach" 2fer. The first album is pretty good, but I'm not sure I'll want to listen to it repeatedly. "Bonobo Beach" however could become a favorite. "Could Be Nice," which I had at least a segment of on tape, is great. Maybe I can come back later and say something more useful about this music, but in the mean time, if I like "Bonobo Beach," what else might I like by Reichel? He seems pretty obscure, yet I don't think the work itself is particularly inaccessible.

Let's put this here.

The liner notes were by. . . Fred Frith. Surprise.

DeRayMi - there was another Reichel thread not that long ago - I think I blabbed on abt 'Rare Bird Ymir', which personally I MUCH prefer to 'Bonobo Beach', but yeah HR is v. cool and groovy.

I did a search but I only found one thread which even mentioned him.

Thre's an FMP thread which mentions him. I think I asked abt Reichel on that occasion.

Julio, he seems like he'd be up your alley, though maybe too pretty at times.

Well...I do have 25+ Derek bailey releases so far so maybe, yes, it is time to get to reichel (though I am not sayinfg he is a derek clone but that he sounds (from what i read) as original as Derek is).

Seek: any of his work featuring the daxophone, a bowed wooden instrument that he invented which produces sounds somewhat like the voice of Charlie Brown's mom in the old cartoons.

Julio, I'd say Reichel has a pretty distinctive styles (or set of styles), yes.

His stuff on Guitar Solos 2 (with other pieces by Frith, Bailey and Fitzgerald) is wonderfull, full of slyly hummable tunes amidst the two handed rumble.

The first track on "Bonobo Beach," "Southern Monologue" reminds me of some of the pieces on a Lou Harrison CD entitled "Music for Guitar and Percussion" (by John Schneider on "well-tempered guitar"). It may just be the tunings used.

"Bonobo Beach" seems much more melodic and texturally varied to me than "The Death of the Rare Bird Ymir."

ten months pass...
Bonobo Beach continues to grow on me, aside from one track. Listening to it tonight, I realize that I really don't understand what he's doing exactly (beyond the sense in which, not being a musician, and not having a knowledge of music theory, I normally don't understand these things). It seems very simple, but the emotional and aesthetic impact are both quite strong. I don't understand the structures he's using, but I think I hear them. It's not as wildly free as what you might expect, and yet I don't know how I'd identify this style of playing. (Intuitive modal?)

three years pass...
So why do people prefer The Death of the Rare Bird Ymir to Bonobo Beach? You don't want no spaces?

He has a cool album with Uchihashi Kazuhisa featuring lots of daxophone.
Haven't heard bonobobeach, but this thread has me curious....
