Just heard about that. The Grim Reaper comes to us all...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who?

Keiko, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

can I have his guitar collection? (I mean that as a tribute - anyone who's seen The Kids Are Alright will understand)

Paul, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BORIS THE SPIDER!! He really was a cool one... a born rock star turned country squire... and the guitar collection was dazzling. No who guy has died since '78, the had a pretty good run I guess. He'll be missed, and perhaps averted another bad Who reunion in the nick of time.

Andy, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he auctioned off most of his basses a few years ago, Paul

M Matos, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now if only the other 2 would die off so that the rest of the planet will not have to endure future Who reunion tours.

This is coming from someone who likes what they did before Tommy.

...and who would wish death on people for merely releasing mediocre records.

"In the place up above you grow feather wings
And you fly round and round
With a harp singing hymns
And down in the ground you grow horns and a tail and you carry a fork
And burn away..."

(I know I put this on the ILE Entwistle thread too but it's such a goddamn great song. RIP)

If you were being serious MT, please Fuck Off.

Dr. C, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This sucks...definitely one of the coolest. RIP

Joe, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not fair! This was one of the greatest bands ever. It always seemed totally unfair that Keith Moon died 11 years before I was even born.

Anna Rose, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, Anna Rose and ethan both heart The Who. The Kids Are Alright indeed.
RIP John.

Jeff W, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed...plus he brought the french horn to pop.

Jez, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

First George Harrison, now . . . Jeez, it just doesn't pay to be "the quiet one."

When I first heard the news this morning I was shocked and a bit saddened, but I swiftly moved on to annoyed because my mental jukebox immediately put "Boris the Spider" on repeat play. So there I am in the shower with "creepy/ crawly/ creepy/ crawly/ creepycreepy/ crawlycrawly . . ." going through my head over and over.

Lee G, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Makes me sade because the Who meant so much to me. Entwhistle's bass playing on Live at Leeds was so full of life.

Mark, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RIP

sundar subramanian, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sad news indeed. Even more than his unique talent and wry outlook, I'll remember Entwistle for that relentlessly aggressive sound he created. His playing was surely the in-your-face opposite of funk.

briania, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The bass solo on "My Generation" - has there ever been a better or more significant one in the history of pop ?

Darren, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Moon and Entwhistle had to be one of the greatest, craziest rhythm sections in the history of the universe (and I don't even like the Who that much).

Kris, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It took this to get the classic radio station here to play "Boris the Spider".

dleone, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a true Legend, RIP.

aaron m, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And apparently the tour must go on.

nickn, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Entwistle's solo in "My Generation" was single-handedly the reason that got me to pick up any kind of instrument (a bass guitar natch) and obsessively listen to songs to pick out the different parts. I'd be a totally different person today without that...

Chris Barrus, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh shit REAL? & here was me thinking the only good thing is at least they'll fucking hang it up now. oh well RIP anyway bass guy from my fav group when i was 15. i'm listening to 'live @ leeds', man thats a great record & his playing on it is just killer.

unknown or illegal user, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RIP Ox.

(Ok, to "unknown or illegal user ", are you fully on crack? were you attempting to say something that made sense? did anyone else understand the ramblings and now i look like i'm on crack??)
