I'm stiing here listening to "In The Beginning" and I think it's wonderfull!! What else is there to find?? Will I have to drain my bank account??

I have a vague memory of liking The Balloon Song, but given the title and the time (1987?) it was probably twee and horrible. Perhaps I should dig it out again, but I doubt I'll bother.

If you've got "In The Beginning" I gather there's a CD on Overground (or some such label) that covers the rest. If you've got the Frank and Sarah singles (which you do) then that's the best stuff IMO.

jim is right, the last record was a bit drab. it was shoegazey but it didn't really do anything for me, loads of effects pedals and some dour droney singing. 'in the beginning' is fab, 'let the breeze open our hearts' is not as good but still pretty worthwhile.

ten years pass...

This man's singing voice... I have only a vague memory of being initially put off, but that memory only lives due to 3 or 4 people hearing me play it since and mentioning how awful it is. Is it really that much more alienating than the 80s vocals of RIYLs like Orange Juice or Pastels? Is it a flatness in his voice? Or just my own coincidental situation?

Pastels and 14 Iced Bears flat, adenoidal vocals with an optional lisp are a post-punk thing via Dan Treacy. Orange Juice is more of a Bowie/Scott Walker thing.

True, I just don't get why 14 iced bears get hate and the same people don't mind those two other examples for instance.

Me too, I guess I have bad luck with people listening in and not digging the voice specifically...

You can get the 2-CD collection "Hold on Inside: Complete Recordings 1991-1986" for insanely cheap. I just got a copy, brand new, from an Amazon 3rd party seller for around $6 (that's including shipping).
Anyway, I just noticed that Black Tambourine's "By Tomorrow" seems to be heavily influenced by 14 Iced Bears' "Surfacer": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivIrlFMdwLs
One tidbit: if you start listening at 2:10, he sings "Do just what you will..." which sounds a lot like the opening vocals on "By Tomorrow": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM86g6cYKb4
And another of Pam Berry's bands, The Shapiros, covered "Cut" by 14 Iced Bears.

BT were definitely big fans. I've noticed a band photo or two where one of them was wearing a 14 iced bears shirt.
