Don't see their name crop up here too much, but I'm currently crankin' the snots outta an mp3 of "White Punks on Dope" off their first record, and am blearly and sleep-deprived enough at the moment to think it's one of the finest bits of music ever recorded. What say you all...?

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Mondo Bondage" -- crap rhymes and all -- is a close second.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

alex in late bid to re-establish "worst taste on ilm" crown!!

mark s, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shame on you, Mark, shouldn't you be somewhere listening to Destiny's Child and slathering yourself in Beyonce's excrement?

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's the great thing abt excrement-slather, it doesn't stop you from posting to ilm!!

mark s, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but mind that you don't get your keyboard sticky.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"She's A Beauty"! Transcends their earlier material by simultaneously transcending AOR while at the same time being a genuinely affecting song about exploitation while being ambiguous about who's being exploited. One of the greatest and most underrated 80s CHR classics.

dave q, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

alex in late bid to re-establish "worst taste on ilm" crown!!
I don't understand how people can use the word bad (or good for that matter) with taste in the same sentence. Then again I haven't heard the Tubes.

nathalie, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it was a joke nath

mark s, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Brighter Day". Or maybe "Space Baby". Lemme think!

I know, that's not one song. But I must say, to the contrary, they were a pretty good band - a VERY tight unit. "God/Bird/Change" from the live double was fuckin' awesome. And I mean good to listen to. Their show was great, too, but the swooshy, bleepy, hyper-compressed records they did before "She's A Beauty" have a mystery production value all their own and belie the "novelty value" of the live act. Quite engaging, really.

Matt Riedl (veal), Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark, so was my comment. hah!

nathalie, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what jokahs we both be!! hah!!! did u shake off the rotterdam bug?

mark s, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Grandiose Instrumental Overture", coz it's got bits from a load of their other songs in it. Otherwise, "TV is King". Possibly otherwise, "Last of the New Wave Riders" har har har.

Norman Phay, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like White Punks on Dope nad What Do You Want From Life. And that line from Boy Crazy "Another waitress with an IUD / Went to the clinic, you got it free." It's not great music but it's quite amusing.

jonathan thrak, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yah, I go with 'What Do You Want From Life?" -- what a smart pop song that is -- and since "knife/life" is one of the tiredest rhymes in all rock, to make it fresh by writing "What do you want from life?/To capture an heiress, and threaten her with a knife?" is genius

Heard "She's A Beauty" on the car radio on the way to the airport a month ago and was surprised by just how affecting a song it was

Yeah, says me.

'She's a Beauty' is CLASSIC, no question.

"White Punks On Dope"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 10 September 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"White Punks on Dope" is ENORMOUS. Period.
It comes out of the same death glam/proto-punk/destroy-everything stuff that made bands like Rocket From The Tomb, Mirrors and Kiss kings.
And, talking about tastes - Alex, you're great. :)

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 10 September 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I Saw Her Standing There (waaaaaaay better than the whiny Beatles version which didn't have a single chainsaw or anything!)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 10 September 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Haloes" from the first album...Wah wah waaah wah w-wa waaaaaaaahhhhhhh.... brilliant guitar licks.

Joe (Joe), Friday, 10 September 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Nina Hagen's "White Punks on Dope" is even better - her version is totally insane, whereas Fee just sounds like he's playing one of his characters.

In general, though, the Tubes' songwriting and sense of humor is just way too '70s to hold up well.

mike a, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

True, Mike, they are prisoners of that era.

Totally didn't know Nina Hagen covered "WPOD". Must hear at once.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

IIRC her version's called TV Glotzer (sp?) Alex.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Last time I checked my record shelf, I'm pretty sure I was a fan of *Tubes, *Young and Rich, *Now, *What Do You Want From Live, *Remote Control, *The Completion Backwards Principle, *Outside Inside, *Love Bomb, *Tubes World Tour, *TRASH (Tubes Rarities and Smash Hits), and *Dawn of the Tubes, though not necessarily in that order (and maybe I'm mixed up about one or two of those.) A really, really cool band in my opinion -- Like Tin Huey and MX-80 Sound, they prove that hard rock/punk/metal/prog/glam/pop/art-rock/joke/whatever bands who ripped off Frank Zappa were much more fun and compelling than Zappa himself.

Talk to ya later (don't wanna see you again tonight),
Chuck

ps. And yeah, Nina H's uber-teutonic "TV Glotzer" is neato as well.

chuck, Friday, 10 September 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ohmygod....Chuck and I are in complete agreement on something!!!!!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you want from life
To kidnap an heiress
or threaten her with a knife
What do you want from life
To get cable TV
and watch it every night

There you sit
a lump in your chair
Where do you sleep
and what do you wear
when you're sleeping

What do you want from life
An Indian guru
to show you the inner light
What do you want from life
a meaningless love affair
with a girl that you met tonight

How can you tell when you're doin' alright
Does your bank account swell
While you're dreaming at night
How do know when you're really in love
Do violins play when you're touching the one
That you're loving

What do you want from life
Someone to love
and somebody that you can trust
What do you want from life
To try and be happy
while you do the nasty things you must

Well, you can't have that, but if you're an American citizen you are entitled to:
a heated kidney shaped pool,
a microwave oven--don't watch the food cook,
a Dyna-Gym--I'll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home,
a king-size Titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polybendum,
a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi,
real simulated Indian jewelry,
a Gucci shoetree,
a year's supply of antibiotics,
a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth
and Bob Dylan's new unlisted phone number,
a beautifully restored 3rd Reich swizzle stick,
Rosemary's baby,
a dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams,
a new Matador, a new mastodon,
a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego,
a Merc Montclair, a Mark IV, a meteor,
a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu,
a Mort Moriarty, a Maserati, a Mac truck,
a Mazda, a new Monza, or a moped,
a Winnebago--Hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're giving 'em away,
or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,
a Las Vegas wedding,
a Mexican divorce,
a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,
or a baby's arm holding an apple?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 19 November 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, only noticed this thread revival just now.

I never got to see them "back in the day" (as those swingin', big-trousered hip hop kids like to say). I can only imagine that seeing them in 2004 would be a little depressing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I never actually saw them but I saw a TV thing (recorded on the same tour as the What Do You Want From Live album IIRC) and they were an absolutely extraordinary piece of wildly over the top theatre.

If they're still doing stage shows like that then I'd love to see 'em!

I've heard rumours that they're playing Punk Aid next March but this hasn't been confirmed by the band's site.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

They were one of the first concerts I went to. They played at a county fair in Northern California a couple of years after "The Completion Backward Principle" came out. I was about 12. It sounds like a depressing setting, but it was actually really fun. There was a big crowd who was really into it, and Fee Waybill did the whole Quay Lude parody, as pictured above, pretending to shoot up with an insect sprayer painted like a hypodermic needle, multiple costume changes, etc. They genuinely "rocked" while constantly foregrounding how ridiculous rock can be, a rare balancing act.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely OTM.

But the question is: have they still got that sense of balance?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea, but my guess is that they probably do. Aging rockers trying to recreate their former glory is usually pathetic, but if you were parodying rock to begin with, it seems like you wouldn't perform again unless you had the energy and enthusiasm to do so. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if they could somehow incorporate making fun of aging rockers into their show, and pulling it off. But who knows? We'd have to find someone who's seen them recently.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I will always owe The Tubes for a college favor. I took my girlfriend to see them and had spent a lot of time anticipating the show. It was in support of "Now," their third non-selling album marking the end of their first major label gig.

The stage show was gigantic: dancers, television sets, men in white lab coats, and S&M slab. They were precise, even hiring mock guerillas to come down the aisles and assault the stage at one point. My girlfriend was horrified, completely unmanned by Re Styles and Fee Waybill during "Mondo Bondage." Her reaction to "White Punks on Dope" -- basically, an exaggerated moral revulsion at the silly rubber dick hanging out of Fee/Quay Lewd's silver lame jock -- crushed an expensive evening.

I thought The Tubes were a laff riot. Plus they cooked, not missing a beat. I never took her seriously after that show.

"Now" has just been issued on CD. I must secure a copy.

George Smith, Monday, 22 November 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Well the Tubes have shook this house on more than a few occasions. I love em. How do I know I love em? My wife hates em! That's a good enough yardstick for me. Give me Telecide any day of the week and I'll find a reason to smile. Todd Rundgren must have had loads of pleasure producing Remote Control.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What, so no-one on this thread has mentioned "Don't Touch Me There"?

OK, I will.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 22 November 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

How could anyone be so humorless as to actually be shocked and offended by the Tubes? The mind reels.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to know if Mrs. Wentworth ever went out with a young man called George Smith while she was at college....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, don't know. My girlfriend was ready to cry, she was so allergic to The Tubes. And I forgot to mention "Don't Touch Me There" spooked her, too.

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Talk to you Later ("Don't wanna see you again tonight!"), though I recently found White Punks on Dope and love it. It's like the Sparks without disco.

It really doesn't take much to send an ilx mind reeling.

Kitt, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Never having seen Kiss, the 7 or 8 Tubes shows I saw in the 70s/80s are far and away the best, tightest, funniest pieces of rock theater I ever witnessed. Diminishing returns, of course, but I saw a reunion gig about ten years ago and the songs still kicked surprisingly well.

Side 2 of the debut LP (Mondo Bondage, WDYWFL, Boy Crazy, WPOD) is a really rockin' fourplay. All of the A&M Tubes records got plenty of spins at my house, the later, blander Capitol label, Toto-associated stuff less so -- although there are gems scattered throughout.

Is anyone else familiar with "Piece by Piece," the opening cut from "Love Bomb"? A great little hard pop-rock single.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Bumped because I am currently listening to The Tubes live in the studio in 1974 (pre-debut LP) and it is rockin' my world!

Gonna say "Remote Control", though "Love's a Mystery (I Don't Understand)" is nearly as good as anything Hall & Oates recorded in the same era.

henry s, Monday, 3 May 2010 02:25 (sixteen years ago)

"She's A Beauty", for the sheer lose-yourself gloriousness. Mr Veg introduced me to them by way of an old SCTV episode where the played "Sushi Sushi" in the middle of one of John Candy's fishing- with- explosives sketches. I asked him who they were and next thing he put Completion Backward, and Inside Out in my hands & sent me on my way. Have loved them ever since. There's nothing quite like them!!

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 3 May 2010 02:48 (sixteen years ago)

The SCTV sketch was "the fishin musician"...

three years pass...

For most of this year, have been reigniting my love for this band. Most days I'm on Grooveshark, "I Want It All Now", "What Do You Want from Life", "Piece by Piece", "Fantastic Delusion", "Drums", "Attack of the 50 Ft Woman", or others are chosen. Instant cheer. Got me to searching out for the holes in my shelves, like _Love Bomb_, and happy to find that Cherry Red has this and a rarities disc available.
