Pick only one: Dangerhouse Records

What a remarkable (yet small) run these guys had. So many great songs, mysterious packaging & advertising, what a time to be alive, in fact. I'm gonna go with "We Got the Neutron Bomb" by the Weirdos, but I could be swayed...beg to differ? What do y'all think about this music?

A seminal LA/West Coast US punk label. A brief but brilliant run. My pick is Dangerhouse's only LP, Black Randy & the Metrosquad's Pass the Dust, I Think I'm Bowie.

Sadie Love - Crushed I could listen to this song over and over again. The one track primarily written by Brian that fit with what the band was trying to achieve as a whole. Chet's chiming twelve string compliments the sound of the highly in demand drummer's cymbals very well. Jimmy spits out vitriol against the "man across the street". This is high crass stuff.

Wasn't the Yes L.A. sampler on Dangerhouse? Motto: "When two- bit nihilism isn't enough to get you on the map." => an answer to the No N.Y. sampler.

I was going to start a Dangerhouse thread, but the search function dug this up. Lately I’ve become obsessed with these guys. Just look at their roster: X, The Bags, The Avengers, The Weirdos, The Deadbeats (who I absolutely love), The Eyes, The Randoms, Rhino 39, The Dils, The Alleycats, and of course Black Randy. Almost every important Los Angeles band and quite a few first generation San Francisco punk bands put out singles through Dangerhouse. Not to mention they employed the said Black Randy. Perhaps the most degenerate man to ever darken a recording studio. (And I thought Factory always won first prize for business stupidity.) So, it’s no surprise the label collapsed amid a sea of bad debts, recriminations, threats of lawsuits, and reputations utterly destroyed. Should have been the American Rough Trade, but it was not to be. Slash and SST stole the history that should have been.

X sang about the “Unheard Music” on the radio and this is so sadly true. The early LA scene is appallingly under-documented. Very little every made it to vinyl. If Dangerhouse had succeeded, we might have LP’s by prime era Weirdos, Dils, Bags, Avengers, Eyes, Alleycats, Deadbeats, and more Black Randy. The music world would be a much better place. Not to mention LA getting it’s just due in the dreaded canon of “Rock’s Rich Tapestry.” Yes, LA indeed!!

Too bad the Screamers never put any thing out on Dangerhouse.

Dils - "Mr. Big"

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 26 August 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Can anyone help on a track ID. I had a black Randy song on a long lost tape and it went a bit like this:
'something something something and I headed west, still can/can't have a lot a fun for 25 cents'.
It was a great song. Any ideas?

"I Slept in an Arcade?"

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 26 August 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

I pick the Weirdos "Solitaray Confinement".

Just downloaded the entire Black Randy LP. I like it a lot better than the Contortions. Does anyone know where you can get Black Randy lyrics?

Tim, I found a sound clip of 'I slept in an Arcade', and you're right. Thanks!

"Let's Get Rid of New York"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 August 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

I guess I nominate the Avengers' Car Crash.

This is one of the many labels I'd like to point out to the Punk Rock idiots (there are many) who think British punk is the be all and end all. This is attacking strawmen on this board but they do exist!

I am British but I've been reading the John Robb book "Punk Rock" and it's so infruriating at times. Mostly when they quote John Lydon. I'm sure that's just what he wants of course, cos he invented punk.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 27 August 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

Greil Marcus says something in Lipstick Traces about how the Dils were "another band that wanted to be the Sex Pistols" or some fucking thing.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 27 August 2006 00:21 (nineteen years ago)

Marcus has said some stupid shit, but that's just mental.

Colonel Poo, after hearing the Dangerhouse stuff I've definitely changed my opinion of LA punk. Beats New York and London with a stick.

Went to this last night

Weirdos were the highlight of the night by far and even now still had a good tankful of high-octane restlessness. Everyone else just seemed happy to be there.

Aw fuck! I'm jealous

It was only a 5330 mile walk for me and I didn't quite set off.

No Dils,Bags, X or Rhino 39?

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 14:19 (eleven years ago)

Oh, apologies, I missed the Rhino 39 band on the flyer
