Very good band, hope to see them again next time they're in town in a few weeks. Did a brief interview with them earlier in the year.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 October 2009 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link

This came out on Peacefrog right? I think that threw me off. Really thought it was bland. Not sure peacefrog need to trouble themselves with middle of the road indie-pop.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 8 October 2009 15:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't know if i agree with that genre-fication

it's euro downtempo/trip hop with femme vox

cutty, Thursday, 8 October 2009 15:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Ok, indie-pop prob. isn't the exact genre for it, but it's def. the style of music that's popular on KEXP, a local station that pretty much only plays 'electronic' music when it's filled with weak vocals and 'real' sounding instruments. That's what makes me equate this album with indie-pop. It's basically Hooverphonic for a new generation.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 8 October 2009 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

And as Hooverphonic are v. good, all is well!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 October 2009 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Should there be a thread for Hooverphonic?

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 8 October 2009 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

definitely trip-hoppy, tho i'd say trip-hop by way of richard x. (or trip-hop that's at least heard richard x.)

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 8 October 2009 16:26 (fourteen years ago) link

you can't just call anything you want indie pop

cutty, Thursday, 8 October 2009 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

good album, "feather" is an awesome song. I also heard trip-hoppy in this, but much less so than what I'd heard from the first album. Mostly just spare, atmospheric synth pop. that's not the same thing, right??

Dominique, Thursday, 8 October 2009 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

there's r&b in there too

Saw them live yesterday playing for free at my city. Amazing act. Yukimi has a very powerful voice for such a small body and drummer did some sort of jazz playing every now and then which was brilliant.

Would definitely recommend catching them on tour, they are very different live than on record.

This track has a nice 'Auto-Rock' feel to it.

Curious as to why this band, which appears to be getting bigger and bigger, never elicits much response here. I can kind of get how they're not the kind of band to make people love or hate them -- maybe too pleasant? -- but also, I don't really know any other bands who sound like them.

I like Little Dragon but mostly wanted to remark on how odd it is that "Ritual Union" has become such a huge slow burn hit (at least in Australia). I hear it all the time now.

We never talked about this year's album did we.

I feel like I always need to reserve one space in my end of year top 20 for an Andy K record.

I love the TEED remix of 'paris', remember the original version being ok, but never investigated any further.

I've seen little dragon live about 4 times, a big fan of their first couple of album particularly, that gorrillaz collab posted above has always interested me as I don't like gorrillaz much but the little dragon verses on this track is some of their best work or at least a sound I think they do very well. This collab is odd from the point of view of its sounds like gorrillaz for exactly 50% of the song (like to the second) and then little dragon for the last half, it's like they never met up and gorrillaz sent them half a track and told them to finish it. The start and finish are literally different tracks by different bands

These guys I’m never in a particular mood for them but whenever their music appears on shuffle or I overhear a “deep cut” on a coffee or bar I think for a brief minute they’re actually amazing.

Today I overheard a song from Nabuma Rubberband which I don’t think I had heard before but made me reconsider picking that one.
