What are your favorite under-the-radar albums that could use more play in 'best of' music discussions?

Here are some which I love and would really like to see more often popping up on best-of lists. Sorted by chronological order.
1. Charles Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (1963)2. The Sonics - Here are the Sonics (1965)3. Anthony Braxton - For Alto (1971)4. Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi del Presente (1977)5. Ground Zero - Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Ver.1.28 (1996)6. Sun City Girls - Dante's Disneyland Inferno (1996)7. Fridge - Happiness (2001)8. Keith Rowe & John Tilbury - Duos for Doris (2004)9. 1. Charles Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (1963)
I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but BS&SL appears on many critics and magazines "greatest-album-ever" lists (especially those focusing on jazz).
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 28 October 2009 11:39 (sixteen years ago)
I've seen a ton of lists that focus on jazz that conspicuously leave out Mingus. It's bizarre, but gradually being corrected. George Russell is another, but it's understandable as there's many to choose from. I'd say any reggae that isn't Marley or the Harder They Come Soundtrack usually gets left out.
The Congos - Heart Of The Congo (1977)Fela Kuti - Zombie (1977)Toots & the Maytals - Funky Kingston (1973)Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band - Lick My Decals Off Baby (1970)Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band - Doc At The Radar Station (1980)Tim Buckley - Starsailor (1971)Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever (1982)Lee Perry & The Upsetters - Super Ape (1976)Rico - Man From Wareika (1976)Justin Hinds & The Dominoes - Jezebel (1976)

My favorites generally fall into the range of conventional top-10 stuff (give or take), but a couple I never see would be Black Vinyl Shoes and Dionne Warwick's Greatest Hits (that might not be the precise title; it's the collection that came out in the mid-70s and covers from "Walk on By" to "Then Came You").

What an outstanding album this is... and spot on, you very rarely see this one heralded as much as it should. I even dare say this is one of the greatest American albums ever recorded in any genre, by any popular artist.

Only five, but with commentary...
Blues & Roots - Mingus: Already mentioned, so maybe disqualified, but first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. So fierce. BS&SL always gets the love, but B&R=Most rocknroll jazz album ever. Cattle Dick - TOK¥O $KUNX: This album started it's own freakin genre; Rustic Stomp. Shit-hot musicians playing sloppy and wild. Drugged-out, drunken psychobilly jugband hoedown. And big fun.
Waveform - TPower: Has anyone else heard this album? It's fucking great. DnB was all about the singles, but this thing hangs together as a document. He nails the funk in the Stoned Paranoia of Urban Alienation. So many great sounds and kickass beats, and the track to track flow just keeps dragging you deeper.... Urban Dancefloor Guerillas - PFunk Allstars: Stone Cold Classic. Top rank of Clinton's output, always seems to get lost in the crazy deep PFunk catalog.
Deguello - ZZTop: So fine. Some badass cats at the top of their game. This album is perfect in a lot of ways. Such a hard act to follow they had to come with a major changeup for the next disc.....
-thanks for everyone else's lists, lots of stuff I've never heard of before, that I suspect I will dig big time. Good to see the love for Opal, Link Wray, Archie Shepp, Phil Ochs, etc, etc... drainCosmo, bring the details, let's beef up this listfest. This thread is a goldmine.....

I don't think I've ever seen these on other lists, but correct me if I'm wrong because I want to see those lists:
Sesame Street cast--Bert and Ernie Singalong (Sesame Street, 1975) (Honestly, I could listen to this all day long, and I don't think it's because of nostalgia.)Weird Al Yankovic-s/t (Scotti Bros 1983)King's X-s/t (Atlatic 1992) (others are better but I'm pretty sure they've been on lists)various-Get Crunk! Butthole Surfers - Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac
that and Rembrandt and Locust, any time I listen they seem like the greatest things ever. Somewhere I read that they were just trying to make records that made them laugh. Albums like that seem to be at a disadvantage with these canonical lists. The Who Sell Out is the only one I can think of that shows up frequently. What others are there?
Along the same lines, I really love The Full Custom Gospel Sounds of the Reverend Horton Heat. "Bales of Cocaine" is my favorite novelty number ever. But the whole record hit the exact centerpoint between Nashville corny and punkrock foaming, session man tightness and hardcore band tightness.

Sometimes my favorite Miles record for how it exists so delightfully in between the early hot crazy shit of the second great quintet and the long dark funk of the fusion period. It sounds positively pulled apart by these two forces.
