"albums sound like they should be reworked massively by an intelligent producer (ie. me)"

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

- Tim

I don't feel like asking a question, so, like, talk about this somehow.

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where did he say this?

Sterling Clover, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What is this thread regarding?

Manny Parsons, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's irrelevant! discuss!

sterl it's on the bands-when-you-were-16 thread, but I don't care who it was said about, I want it discussed in general

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, well, "...And Justice for All" seriously needs to be remastered or remixed or something! (It also has one of the best cover arts I've ever seen!)

Manny Parsons, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim was talking about Marillion there, I believe.

I'd revamp Marc Almond's Enchanted and the Associates' Wild and Lonely for a start.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what gives YOU the right eh? how often do we say "that novel should've been re-worked by an intelligent editor ie me", "his guitar parts there should be reworked massively by an intelligent guitarist ie me"? there seems to be a special I-could-do-that air about production.

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Josh, the fantasy of production is that we could do it ourselves without having to worry about:

1) the ego of the artist

2) the pressures of the record company

3) the need for one's own future employment

As such, it's music geek fanfic without the sex or man luv.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who says you'd be any good at it? just cuz you're some schmuck with discerning tastes etc. etc. big record collection etc. etc. I read lots of books but that doesn't mean I'd be a good editor!

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me reemphasize the word 'fantasy' here. ;-) We like to imagine that we can dream those really cheesed-out synths on that one song can just disappear, for instance.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone should remix the whole of ILM.

DG, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but the thing about production (as opposed to engineering) is that it's mostly a taste job, ie. 'this would sound better with lots of drippy reverb' or 'please mic this amplifier so that the guitarist sounds like a fifteen year old who just bought a zoom pedal'.

Dave M., Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this a Big Brother thread?

Graham, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if it were just a taste job I think there wouldn't be so many badly produced records. say what you will about people but I think their taste is in general better than that.

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or ARE THERE?

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

music geek fanfic without the sex or man luv.

Aw.

Sean, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sean, early thirties, isn't the USUAL record producer..."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Josh Kortbein really asking these questions? The voice sounds different.

Mark, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why dontcha just PRODUCE ME then you're so damned competent at it

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

say what you will about people but I think their taste is in general better than that.

file under "comments that will come back to haunt you"...

Dave M., Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My meaning was pretty much what you'd expect - the ideas in the music are still really good, but they need to be treated more sensitively. My "me" was flippant, obviously, because by saying "intelligent producer" I *of course* mean a producer who'd do things the way I imagine they should be done.

Obv. I have no production skills to speak of whatsoever.

Tim, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Tim would produce GRATE records!

Keiko, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope we're not confusion production with engineering here. You don't need to be good at anything to produce a record.

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like a crack at RAW POWER...I'd try to "split the difference" between the Bowie and the Iggy mixes. Someone get me the masters, please.
