yowsa---it's more like, what not to vote for. Def. not "Kick Out The Jams" but o/w uhhh can I vote for everything else? I can narrow it to 10 for now I guess:

227 1982 Prince 1999
231 1984 Cyndi Lauper Money changes everything
233 1972 Stevie Wonder Superstition
234 1982 Pretenders Back on the chain gang
235 1957 Everly Brothers Bye bye love
242 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival Fortunate son
243 1966 Bob Dylan Just like Tom Thumb's blues (live)
244 1972 Rolling Stones Tumbling dice
248 1962 Crystals He's a rebel
250 1964 Beach Boys I get around

and I guess tbh I lean toward "1999" or "Back On The Chain Gang" or the live 1966 "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues".

that was tough...went with "tumbling dice"

I assume the live Tom Thumb is from the Royal Albert Hall/Manchester shows from 1966. So that.

Towering greatness at the top of the list...Yeah, it must be Royal Albert Hall; I have an old bootleg, but don't recall that specifically. The studio version would be my #1; as is, I'll go 1. "Fortunate Son," 2. "Tumbling Dice," 3. "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues." I'm betting "Superstition" wins, possibly even by a wide margin.

A word for "Crusin'," please.

These are getting suckier and suckier.

j/k

I voted for "He's A Rebel," one of Spector's few masterpieces (yeah yeah yeah) although I wish Pitney had sung it. The MC5 and Stones cuts sound better on their respective albums. In fact, CCR and Green (and Sly & The Family Stone and The Stylistics and) make more sense to me on a greatest hits album than on individual singles, i.e. I wouldn't know how to rank the singles so convenient and/or perfect are their greatest hits, ya know?

I want to love Lauper's "Money Changes Everything" as much as Marsh, Marcus, et al, but I just like it.

bump

"Superstition"

if I don't see more dissent, I'm going to have to check myself in (Matos W.K.), Friday, 8 January 2010 17:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Lots of good stuff on here. I think I need to hear a few things (e.g., the Little Richard version of "Rip It Up") before I could vote in good conscience.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Tons of good stuff. But I'll give a vote for Sonny & Cher. Don't want them to get shut out.

jetfan, Saturday, 9 January 2010 00:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Bob for me.

seandalai, Saturday, 9 January 2010 00:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Everly Brothers for me. Getting harder as the countdown continues.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 9 January 2010 01:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Cyndi or Searchers or Dylan or Al or Smokey or Beach Boys. Leaning towards Smokey or Cyndi (my favourite song of '84, pretty sure).

A word for "Crusin'," please.

Yeah, this might be the one for me (though Cyndi is really close -- greatest hard rock/synthpop track ever?). I've always loved the story about Springsteen filling out an entire cassette with "Cruisin'" just so he could listen to it over and over again in the car. True or not, it really is exactly that kind of song, you can never get too far lost in the thing.

I'm putting out an APB for President Keyes...Our work is not finished; we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the completion of the Heart of Rock and Soul polls.
