Interested in the "trilogy" angle - - - I was really enraptured by Busta singles at the time so it feels natural for me to group them more by album, mainly all the When Disaster Strikes stuff going together, with "Woo-Hah!" being this curious archive item that supposedly was a huge hit before I was paying any attention, and "Gimme Some More" being the hot-off-the-presses revelation. I think "Gimme" beats the other two here hands down, although "Dangerous" kind of sounds weirder and weirder as time goes on and its strange quietness becomes more and more noticeable. Never really got "Hands" at all.

"Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" has one of the most singular beats in the history of popular rap music, compounded by the fact that it didn't have a slew of ripoffs follow immediately after like "The Message"/"Hard Times"/"Rebel Without A Pause"/"Grindin"/"A Milli"

plus its a whiney karaoke staple :)

"Hands" (the beat) and "Dangerous" (the sample) running about even, with "Gimme" pretty far behind.

part of my love of "Gimme Some More" stems from the fact that it's only 2 and a half minutes long, which is super brief by hip hop single standards, and gives a whole other edge to its weird energy. apparently it was a top 5 hit in the UK? odd, wasn't particularly big here compared to some of his other singles.

I think "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" is one of the best songs of the 90s.

Gimme Some More has the best video but Put Your Hands

mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 11 January 2010 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't like "Dangerous" all that much before I saw the video.

Love the sample on Gimme Some More.

My favourite Busta single is Break Your Neck.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Monday, 11 January 2010 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

There should be a poll just for the music videos.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Man.. this is so tough. All 3 are in my top 10 songs for their respective years.. which would be "Put Your Hands" for '97, "Gimme Some Mo" for '98, and I guess I would place "Dangerous" in '98 because he says "1998 y'all" even though When Disaster Strikes was '97.

Man.. that commercial with the pills is blowing my mind.. I totally remember it, but I don't recall ever making the connection that "Dangerous" used it for half of its chorus.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 06:52 (sixteen years ago)

WOW. Never seen that before, amazing. Kinda wish he'd just kept going and used the rest of it too.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 06:57 (sixteen years ago)

I voted "Put Your Hands" but really they're so close.. It could have been any of them... I know I just mentioned something similar to this, but they're probably the best hiphop singles of their respective years.. alongside "Hypnotize," "Mo Money Mo Problems" and "Triumph." And "Gimme Some Mo" would likely still be my winner for '98.

next: "Get Out!!" vs "Fire"?

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

(ie the busta singles that nobody would ever claim as definitive of any era/year/week in music but for which i have a strange affection)

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

I shoulda voted "Dangerous.." It was stuck in my head a lot today bc of this poll.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

P.S. I'm not a big Busta Rhymes fan.. he's kinda lame mostly. Leaders Of The New School was aiight.
