"There Something Going On"

Was a song by Frida, who was in Abba, I believe. We all agree that this is an incredible song, right?

It's the best possible argument in favor of the "80s Gated Drum Sound," anyway.

I mean, the drums make it. That was the sound the Power Station copped, but they never had a melody nearly that good.

Weird, weird song. One of the first pop things I heard on the radio in the fall of 1982, I think. Very strange to hear on the radio (and if nothing else proof that Phil Collins can be some sorta crazy genius when he wants to be).

I liked it so much I BOUGHT THE COMPANY...well, the album, anyhow.

And..?

Well, I'm convinced that the US was in another dimension from 1979- 1984, anyway. I was in my mid-teens then, and I and a friend spent one weekend pretending that a bush in my backyard was a portal from Trees-cause-more-pollution-than-factories Reaganland back to the Real World.

Getting back to the subject, it is a wonderfully grating song, isn't it?

The album is GRATE. I don't know what the hell Collins was thinking when he applied this production technique to Frida, but it's wonderfully claustrophobic and it puts her voice into territory that shea wasn't in very often...much more like "The Visitors" than any of the other material she did with ABBA. Only problem is that much of the material wasn't quite up to the usual standards....though some of it is very good. (I'm pretty much partial to "Tell Me It's Over" as a backup choice but the one we're talking about is still tha champ.)

five years pass...

it's a good album! "Here We'll Stay" should have been a huge 80s soundtrack hit.
