I Just Heard the Gayest Song on Earth!

Heh! Got the attention of all the Anal Cunt fans! Which should be everybody! Anyway here's my theory about the oft-controversial 'g' word! See, people always refer to stuff as 'gay', but they don't usually refer to things with actual homosexual content as 'gay'. I.E., you always hear "Eminem/James Hetfield/The Rock is a fag", etc., but not "Elton John is so gay." Perhaps 'gay'-as-insult means 'in the closet', i.e. being a 'fake' and not admitting one's true nature! ('Authenticity' big in US crit discussion). I.e. 'Metallica is gay', when coming from 15-yr-old = 'Metallica sold themselves as a metal band but they're really corporate sellouts' etc. (Now you and I are smart people who know not to care about such things but the people who use these epithets most are teenagers, who ALWAYS have big issues about who or what is 'real' [i.e., "I'm lost, I need a role model/idol etc" Remember?], and are notoriously thin-skinned when it comes to being 'betrayed' or conned (see every hardcore lyric ever written), so I think perhaps pronouncing somebody 'gay' just means 'they AREN'T who I thought they were and anyway they lied about it'! Like, I know some queers and if you refer to, say, the Hives as being 'gay' they don't mind, but if I was to say "That fag from Pop Idol" then things would get harsh, see the difference? Cuz he's out of the closet, so I'd be something for PURELY malicious reasons, right? (As opposed to being malicious for other reasons!) (Admittedly the germ of this idea came from the 'Synanon' seq. in 'Scanner Darkly')

Oh yeah, 'gayest song on Earth'. That would have to be Styx' "Crystal Ball". "Crystal ba-a-a-a-a-a-llllll, tell me-e-e-e-e where I'm going..." I defy even Julio to defend this song. Seriously, one listen will prove beyond doubt to anyone that it is indeed the Gayest Song on Earth!

Everyone knows that the whole gay epithet thing, even when from the mouths of lemming teens, is often nothing more than American suburban father-figure displacement. Or, in the case of the real macho types.... often a cloaked reference to their own homosexuality. Visit tshirthell.com. Best T-shirt ever - "Homosexuals are gay."

maria, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, that's just a weak rip of the buddyhead "homophobia is gay" t- shirt.

"I think perhaps pronouncing somebody 'gay' just means 'they AREN'T who I thought they were and anyway they lied about it'!"

I think if I was gay I would find this even more insulting than just using "gay" as a generic derogative.

Once again, I suppose I'd be offended if I had any idea what dave q was going on about.

It's worth remembering that "gay" also means "happy" or "carefree", etc. When I hear "that's so gay" I don't think homsexual, I think wimpy, esp. because I don't think that people using it are thinking about it as some queer slam, they're just using it to indicate something that they don't like.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thought the shirt was "Hetrosexuals are gay" which at least was odd.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Sean.

Sean, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dolph: Oh, man! You kissed a girl!
Jimbo: That is so gay!

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's as gay as a window.

Homosexuals "muck about"

Kris England, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who the hell are "buddyhead?" And, no the slogan "Homosexuals are gay" isn't a ripoff of "Homophobia is gay," because the latter is preachy, didactic, and too politically correct, spud boy.

maria, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The British are gay.

maria, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Swinging" London is definitely gay, levels of gayness much reduced in the provinces. Glasgow definitely not gay (well, not to it's face anyway)

Kris England., Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Using the term "politically correct" as a slur is gay. It is also SO 1996.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this whole thread is homosexual.

drake, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Natey.... "gay" as a slur to mean "dated," eh. Okay, THAT doesn't sound gay, that sounds homosexual.

maria, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Calling me "Natey" is gay. Wait, no it's not. It's... uh... transsexual? Dammit, now I'm confused. Lousy teenage glue-huffer insults got me all befuddled.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A little obsessive with this thread, eh. I hear that there are hotlines that you can call, Natey. It's...... okay, if yer gay babe. S'okay.

maria, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, this is getting to Portal of Evil levels here. I WAS NEVER IN THIS THREAD
