Though you could do it by alphabetical order within genres but I would be too lazy after filing it by 'invented genre'.

And Sunroof... wow. The drummer & second guitarist were the guys from Sunburned Hand Of The Man. Brutal heavy acid rock.

I've seen Scorces be better. They were good last night, but for some reason I just wasn't into it as much as when I'd seen them in the past.
I left pretty early on into JOMF's set. I think I was just kinda in a bad mood because I went by myself and didn't really know anybody there (tho I ran into Alan Licht and Dave Pajo outside as I was leaving, and talked for a couple minutes).

hstencil's "namedropping" doesn't bother me. It's fine. I like it how he always talks about the guy from GGD who stole his headphones.
― admrl, Monday, 23 July 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)
i only know them from that show last year with bunnybrains and sir richard, but they were great there. massive sound, mad gibbering vocals, awesomeness.
― tipsy mothra, Monday, 23 July 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)
would love to see them live

What the hell, just heard them for the first time and it was good. Who knew?
― john. a resident of chicago., Monday, 22 October 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)
fig.5 still the best for me. think that album set me up to like a lot of so-called freakfolk or whatever and hardly anthing i heard after that album - by other bands - was as good.
― scott seward, Monday, 22 October 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)
what are some good albums to start with these folks? have heard the name for years but tbh i kind of don't like the name but just listening now to ballads of the revolution and it's really good. occupies kind of a similar space as some mv & ee records

I dig this one, "Black Squirrels", and its associated album "The Magick Fire Music", pretty well. Always found them to be a pretty mixed bag but when good they are really good:

They were fantastic the first time I saw them around the time of fig. 5, they had a couple of sax players iirc and the emphasis was mostly on skronky free jazz noise as high-energy drone music, but I never found an album of theirs that captured quite the same vibe

So basically I should check out grandavis's suggestion I think
― Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 8 January 2015 19:16 (eleven years ago)
Check out the split w/ Tom Carter/Helena Espvall from last year; I prefer the Carter/Espvall track but both sides are pretty good!
― cwkiii, Thursday, 8 January 2015 19:18 (eleven years ago)
cool!
digging that black squirrels tune, thanks grandavis
― marcos, Thursday, 8 January 2015 19:18 (eleven years ago)
Haven't listened to that record in ages mind you, just remember "Black Squirrels" being a good listen.
― grandavis, Thursday, 8 January 2015 19:21 (eleven years ago)
Huh, the only time I saw JOM live was at an ATP, and they took SO LONG to tune up/setup that they were only allowed to actually play for a v v short time. It didn't help that I'd seen Vibracathedral Orchestra w/ Matthew Bower deliver a far more effective wig out/whatnot set earlier on that day.
― sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 8 January 2015 20:01 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, one time I saw them live and it was really enjoyable, another it was really unfocused and uneventful. Nature of the beast perhaps.
― grandavis, Thursday, 8 January 2015 20:06 (eleven years ago)
For sure - second time I saw them it was a lot of low-key piddling about with guitars in an aimless kind of way. was actually a lot closer to the two or three records I have by them
― Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 8 January 2015 20:22 (eleven years ago)
I only have Valley of Fire but I love it.

IMO "Fig 5" is their stand-out album. One of my all time faves. I'd then listen to "Liberation" and "Change". Saw them live in 2002 or so and was memsmerised - wonderful improv slowly building and congealing before unraveling again. I then saw them later, about 2007 or so, but wasn't so impressed.
― Duke, Thursday, 8 January 2015 22:11 (eleven years ago)
I've seen them twice, really enjoyed one and the other (which I think was the same one Ward saw) didn't really get or go anywhere.
Liberation is the album I'd pick up to listen to probably before any of the others but agree it's not objectively their best, which probably is Fig 5.

Anyone else with the LP version of Magick Fire Music have sides A and C switched? This is prob a question for Discogs or something but figured no one would see it there.
