tell me if i'm wrong- danzig is wretched

my ex and i have any number of differences, but the one we talk about the most lately is danzig.

i just can't abide by his shit, even though i dig the misfits, and not even as heterosexual camp. everything he does is just so undistinguished and predictable, including the diletante style dabblings in "industrial".

it's not the "satanic" stuff that annoys, as i love diamanda galas. and everyone is entitled to be swayed by their choice of eye candy (i mean what reason other than selma is there to watch "dusk 'til dawn" ?)

is there something i'm not hearing ?

You managed to go through your whole rant without really involving his music at all.

paul, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ok then...it's pedestrian, the solos aren't anything more than penatonic dreck.

since high school people have tried to get me interested, but no dice.

i have to say that, as metal goes, post halford preist is better.

mike (ro)bott, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You are not wrong at all ... never could understand the appeal of Danzig myself. What anyone sees in this pretentious, steroid-popping Jim Morrison rip-off* with sub-Henry Rollins lyrics is beyond me. I like my buttrock straight-up with no bullshit, thank you very much. And if I want Satanic, there's a countless number of black/death metal groups to satisfy that, uh, "need."

(*not that the original Jim Morrison was all that great, but at least he had the grace to become a fat and nasty drunk and then drop dead)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Glann Danzig's music can be enjoyed so long as you don't take him too seriously. To his credit, he has a reasonably seasoned and distinctive voice in a genre of screechy soundalikes. His Evil Elvis shtick is incredibly silly -- and he knows it -- but who cares? The joke's worn thin a bit, maybe, but his older stuff still holds up.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a fat and nasty drunk

Which I gather Danzig is now. Saw him put on a good show back in 1994 and John Christ, who I interviewed beforehand, was a friendly, no- nonsense kinda guy. Which is probably why he left the band. ;-)

I figure whatever the nonsense from one of the legendary Gnomes of Darkness (the other being Andrew Eldritch), most of the Misfits' work entitles him to a free pass.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Danzig is far better than the loony wrestlers who are calling themselves the Misfits these days. Danzig's silliness at least has some sort of professional sheen to it; it works for me.

Kris, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, of course the Danzig-era Misfits are classic. And it's conceded that if there's anything sillier and more pointless than Danzig these days, it's the current incarnation of the Misfits.

Still can't stomach his solo stuff, though.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'mother' is the best song I ever heard come on a mid-90s buzz bin cd in a sports bar

Josh, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, the first couple of Danzig albums are worthwhile for the singles. "Her Black Wings" from Danzig II: Lucifuge especially.

John Darnielle, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Misfits and the first Danzig album remind me of my senior year in high school. I haven't listened to either much since that time.

I don't think anyone could take Danzig seriously, maybe some do, which is kind of scary. He is Conan stuck at Danny Devito's height, which kind of kills off his "aura".

The production on that first Danzig record is pretty sharp. It has that AC-DC stripped to bones sound down.

earlnash, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a Konigsberg man myself.

DV, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

His perfectly styled hair and gym-pumped body are pretty funny.

Sean, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YEAH, FUCK DUDE, let's do some serious SATAN WORSHIPPING! I've got the goat and the knife...huh? Now? Oh, I'm at the salon. Yeah, taking care of those nasty split ends, wondering if I should get the tips frosted or something. No, no, basic black is probably better. Four o'clock? No, four's not good, I have a session with my personal trainer. Yeah, okay, I'll get back to you.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gym-pumped body

Eh, not recently -- apparently a gut now flaps noticeably in the breeze.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember going to see him in high school during his Best Buy signing tour. I also remember thinking what a brilliant idea it was to release a horrible record and then not have to bother going through all the hassle of actually touring for it and playing the music, just do signings and make people buy it. He refused to sign any Misfits stuff haha (and he was as short as they say).

Some of the nu-Misfits stuff is fun. 'Dig Up Her Bones' sounds like Iron Maiden!

Jordan, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the misfits are nothing now without danzig! dude, give me danzig-era misfits and their cuddly satanism over that crotchety diamanda galas anyday

maybe we are just different people

also the "dilettante style dabblings in "industrial"" are charming

g(ee)ta, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

i like some of the quieter stuff on say danzig III and IV when the man's not crooning cock-rock style, particularly the slower sections of 'anything'. the louder stuff sounds dated and lame, particularly if he IS taking himself 100% seriously.

in real life, he sounds like an intriguing guy. my friend had to drive him and his manager around a couple of years back and was actually in a car crash. apparently danzig didn't even flinch during the whole incident, just sat in the back seat with massive black sunglasses, completely composed.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 6 August 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

That makes me like him a little bit more.

I think I sold my Danzig and Misfits cd about 6 or 7 years ago.

Drooone, Monday, 6 August 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

i'd never sell my misfits stuff. fuck an adulthood.

also still like the first danzig album.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 6 August 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

I love the Misfits and like Samhain, but the only Danzig album I've heard was III which I think is supposed to be a good one, and I hated it.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 6 August 2007 08:31 (eighteen years ago)

i love the first four albums

latebloomer, Monday, 6 August 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

Is he the one with a lyric that goes "I ain't no dweeb" ?

If so, yes.

Mark G, Monday, 6 August 2007 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

i like the first three danzig albums.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

Misfits are fun and had some really classic songs, but I really liked Samhain's Initium and November-Coming-Fire more than anything else he was involved with. Even listening to it now, it's some pretty weird music that doesn't really seem to fit into any genre very well.

rockapads, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

danzig 1-3 are "OK"

chaki, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

i actually heard a couple songs from an album he had out in 2002(? maybe?) and i really liked them! i know, i was as surprised as anyone. "wicked pussycat" and another one. catchy like crazy.

i liked the songs okay on the first album (and i was excited to hear it when it came out) but i REALLY didn't like the production. and i'm no rick rubin hater. so, i never played it much.

i can't hate on the lil' dude though. i dug samhain a bunch and i like EVERYTHING the misfits did. seriously, EVERYTHING. every song.

scott seward, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

i loved novembercomingfire and i'm sad that i no longer own a copy. one of my fave album covers too.

scott seward, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

can anyone rep for the song on the less than zero soundtrack featuring the unleash the poer and the fury honor the fire orchestra?

chaki, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

"You and Me" -- yes, it's fucking brilliant.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, that's a fucking awesome song. an album of that kind of stuff would've been better than those black areola records.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Agreed to all that. First Danzig vocal I ever heard!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

one of my fave album covers too.

Me too! At one point I considered a tattoo... glad I didn't in retrospect, though.

rockapads, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

Misfits rekkids are pretty much repped hard by every hardcore band/pop-punk band since since 1985, but the Danzig records are very slept-on, awesome hard rock.
