what is the greatest soul tune ever written (dont be scared to be commercial folks)

Sorry, i know we shld jst talk at home, but i felt i had to!! I agree with the 'aint no sunshine' but i would also add, 'lets get it on' & 'summer breeze' (if that's allowed!) x

What's Going On or maybe thats the greatest soul album.

Ain't No Sunshine is great too - I particularly like Roy Ayers version.

And the classic Northern Soul "3 Before 8" - traditionally the last three songs played before an all nighter would end at 8am. Heart rending, dance floor shredders each and all.

Jimmy Radcliffe - Long After Tonight is all Over

Tobi Legend - Time Will Pass You By

Dean Parrish - I'm On My Way

oh the big three - but i prefer that as an event - great choices baby

and yes whats going on is the greatest soul album ever

My vote goes to Dark End of the Street. Dan Penn wrote it & James Carr sang it best, but ain't hardly nobody does it so wrong I don't wince up a little when I hear it.

"Im your puppet" James and Bobby Purify or anything by Sam Cooke.

born clippy, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh def Sam Cooke!!!

Pinkpanther, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Give it Up - Curtis Mayfield.

Tell it like it is-Aaron Neville

Smokey Fuckin Robinson

Chris, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think a song, not a singer is required, Poops. So let's say: "Tracks of My Tears".

Hey born clippy, was I right about that David Holmes thing?

Jeff W, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracks of My Tears is ok. I suggest "Bad Girl"

Chris, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and again "I'm Your Puppet" - James and Bobby Purify.

For me it would be Al Green's Tired Of Being Alone, but as this is my favourite musical area ever I could list hundreds of favourites. And I'm glad someone already mentioned James Carr, another huge favourite of mine (I particularly love Pouring Water On A Drowning Man).

"these arms of mine" - otis redding

I always seem to forget abt Smokey Robinson when these soul threads come up - so, for today, howzabout 'Tracks of my Tears'...

can i just say i've tried and tried and tried to even *like* "what's going on" but it still sounds like mush to me. i *adore* soul music - "sha la la (make me happy)" by al green is probably at the moment my favourite soul song - but "what's going on" has left me cold like nothing else. by far and away the most over rated "classic" album i've heard. if anyone can point me where i'm going wrong i'd be most grateful....

commonswings, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there a "Classic" album that isn't in some way over rated? the very need to classify creates a strange mist over my eyes....what's going on?

damo, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isaac Hayes' version of "Walk On By". One of the few songs that runs over ten minutes yet still manages to justify every second of its running time.

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nine years pass...

From another thread, but RIP Martin
Al Green is my favourite singer ever and I love him like life itself, except more. When listening to classic Al Green records (especially How Can You Mend A Broken Heart) I not infrequently find myself ignoring Al Green's singing (IGNORING AL GREEN'S SINGING!) to focus entirely on the beautiful drumming. That's how good he is.
