make me like Yoshimi...

...or at least convince me that i should forget soft bulletins middlingness and go and buy this record.

so far i've heard that its fairly like soft bulletin, but more orchestral and with some breakbeats. if you were going to use this line to convince me, it won't work

i liked flaming lips when they were a spangly sparkly psychepop band (ie hit to death in the future head/transmissions from the satellite heart). i didn't like soft bulletin at all, it was only made to look a little better by being better than the *worst album of the 90s* - deserters song (its spiritual cousin)

but, i saw the yoshimi posters, and i like the name of the album, so...convince me of its worth!

if you didn't like "soft bulletin," then i really don't see you liking the new one either.

If I were in London, Gareth, I'd twist your arm behind your back and shove you into a wall and say, "Like Yoshimi now, motherfucker!"

But from halfway around the world I don't think I can make you like it.

Seriously though, I haven't heard it yet but from what I've read I can't believe someone who hates Soft Bulletin would like it. It's like someone who hates Check Your Head liking Ill Communication.

Heh, I thought this thread title meant that you wanted us to make you into that woman from the Boredoms: "Well, first start hanging around with Yamatsuka Eye a bit more...."

What everyone else said. If you didn't like The Soft Bulletin (and I find that hard to believe, but I suppose it's possible), then there's nothing here to change your mind. I liked the Soft Bulletin a fair deal, but I find this one more like an imitation than an evolution. So, take a pass.

yeah Gareth, save yer money for some Reinforced classics!

Well... Do you like robots? That's seriously the selling point for me. Dude... robots are so cool.

I don't think it's that similar to The Soft Bulletin. It's a lot less diverse, but that's not so bad - it's unified by some abstract funky quality. If you do like it, it won't be the same way you liked the earlier records. (the debate, i guess, is how many angles you can really approach the Flaming Lips from, haha)

I listened to this a little bit in a record store the other night, being pretty interested in it but not having heard much of their stuff (not even Soft Bulletin *gasp*). I really liked the actual sound of the record, all warm keyboards and beats, but (oddly enough) I have no idea if I would like the songs themselves over time. That's a good enough reason to try it out I suppose.

this thing with the beats and stuff, am i to expect a harmony rockets golden ticket retread or something?

gareth, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The first song is great = sparkly psychepop. But the rest is okay, but doesn't match the first song. And, it doesn't carry on the robotic theme, I thought it was a concept album. So, overall it's just okay.

More orchestral? I found it a lot less orchestral, and more, um, electronic. Just download Are You a Hypnotist? and One more Robot and see for yourself, they're the standout tracks IMO.

because it's more fetishisation of japanese twee-robot-mario culture, you see?

I dunno... I find Yoshimi far less similar to the Soft Bulletin than most people here. The instrumentation driving the tracks is completely different (Bulletin's piano and orchestration vs. Robot's synths, drum machines, and sparse electric guitar), and the songs n' themes are far more accessible this time around. A lot of people I know who couldn't get into them before are finding this record approachable.
