I adore the new Coldplay record.

And I don't even care who knows it.

Dreadful lyrics, mind. But there's something so gorgeously starry about the production that causes me to forget how pedestrian it probably actually is. Plus there's the fact that I've just broken up with my live-in girlfriend of three years and so I'm particularly susceptible to these types of albs - however maudlin - right now.

So then, lemme have it.

Mark, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's weird, just as this question pops up, Coldplay's "One I Love" was playing on my PC (I have never knowingly heard a Coldplay record before) (It was rub by the way)

zebedee, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry to hear that, Mark. :-( Hope the next few days go by as well as can be.

Alas I think Coldplay are awful -- but! I haven't heard this new one. If they seriously are turning into Echo and the Bunnymen, that's good, but I fear that Chris Martin will never be Ian M. (and their guitarist never will be Will Sergeant).

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Ned. The only reason I bring it up is because I get oddly defensive about my unhealthy love for this band's work. Which, I suppose, is a bad way to be.

Too many critics.

Mark, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Coldplay too, and I don't care who knows it. They make nice, warm, melancholy music, and it's not bombastic like the awful Starsailor, or bland like "The Invisible Band." Haven't heard any new stuff, except they played a couple of new ones live when I saw them a year ago (yeah, I went to their gig: so what?), but Parachutes is very good. Deserving of its success.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've found myself humming the new Coldplay single, and immediately felt guilty for liking it. I think this is the musical equivalent of laughing at Friends.

Matt DC, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

most depressing thread on ILM evah!

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you can laugh at Friends as much as you like. Laughing with Friends is surely another matter.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have an MP3 of some live cover they did of "You Only Live Twice". That was okay.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Friends is a superior sitcom. The general context of all the shenanigans is the lives of solipsistic whining whitebread aging adolescents, but that doesn't necessarily make the comedy less funny. (So I just don't watch it.)

Aaron, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think John Lydon put it best when he asked: "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated???"

When you buy a coldplay album you are being taken for a sucker. There is a whiney highschool band practicing down the block from my house. The only difference between them and coldplay is that coldplay has video's on mtv and major label money. Just say NO musical suckery.

mt, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

another thing, they give me their cd's for free, so they are automatically superior.

mt, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Talk about a 180 degree shift! ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Coldplay are the musical equivalent of touching the bin with Sandy from BB3s tepid urine all over it.

Ronan, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

coldplay's singer looks like a lost puppy, maybe this is part of the appeal.

keith, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cold Play are great. The new record is true to form. I have ordered the new alb and don't care who knows.

Lewy, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When you buy a coldplay album you are being taken for a sucker.

I'm interested in this statement, mainly because it implies that Coldplay are complicit in peddling a prefab image of themselves in order to appeal to lonely, introspective, oversensitive white boys. I hardly think that's the case. For the most part, I believe that Coldplay *are* lonely, introspective, oversensitive white boys. And perhaps part of the reason I like them so much is because, when I'm honest with myself, I am too.

I'd be dumb(er?) to attempt to defend them within the context of any of the generally accepted critical hallmarks of 'goodness.' On that level, they're virtually indefensible. But so much rock criticism bears the scars of solipsitic self-denial nowadays - why contribute?

Mark, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure about 'solipsistic self-denial'. I thought the purpose of good rock criticism was to enthuse, evagelize, and proselytize.

Hmmm...if you think Coldplay are great, then fair enough. Just as long as you don't think the guy's a great singer.

D., Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only reason they are the only UK band big in the US right now is because they sound like a warm, gentle, unfunky Dave Matthews Band..."The space betweeeeeeennnn..." This is undeniable... it's Dave Matthews for your girlfriend.

Andy, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

Revelation 1:10 "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice as of Chris Martin singing on 'Violet Hill' ... his head and his hairs were white like wool, and there was snow, white snow"

And Lo! I did see this on the telly yesterday and I did adore it. The video is beautiful, reminiscent of the best Depeche Mode stuff. I did wonder whether that had skewed my impression of the track - it is Coldplay after all - but I've been listening to it on repeat and it's getting better and better. A lovely plodding rhythm and it sounds like the words actually mean something for once. Lovely vocals and a beautiful piano give it a faintly religious feel. It sounds really nice, quite echoey and sentimental with enough distortion and dissonance to keep it from feeling, y'know, too comfortable. I can't remember listening to anything like it since Radiohead lost it - even then, it's not got that irritating moaniness, so maybe Timbaland is a better comparison. It sounds nothing like Timbaland.

Ach, I don't know what I'm talking about really, I just know that I love this. Just goes to show, the best stuff can hit you from surprising directions.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

Oh damnit I still haven't heard Violet Hill yet and it's all your fault (as my dad used to say).

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

Me gots a Radiohead ticket for August. Best live band in the world today, bar none.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:28 (eighteen years ago)

I heard it on The Hits in our college bar and thought it sounded like Oasis.

Just got offed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

Don't ruin it for me.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

HAHAHHA

BEWARE THE OASIS!!!!

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

Glad to meet you live in ILX, Mr. Jagger

They bad-mouth you but on music tastes alone, I could never understand why.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

Who needs Chaki?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

Hello Mr. Bimble. They bad-mouth(ed) me because I posted like a hysterical defensive retard for over a year. Fortunately things seem to have turned around for the most part, and I am only mocked for my occasional affinity towards certain British rock-groups. Only fair tbh!

Just got offed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

Fan-fucking-tastic
Do you have a blog?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:45 (eighteen years ago)

Or are you trying to tell me you actually like Slade and are embarassed for this?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

No, I don't. All thoughts, musical or otherwise, generally find their way onto messageboards such as ILX, or my F******k page. Although given I only finished uni studies two days ago, I might now have the time/inclination to start a blog. We'll see.

Slade?! haaha not my thing sir!

Just got offed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

BAHAHA!@ Don't like Slade! That's bloody wonderful, mate. My good friend of ten years here in town likes Slade.

I see you are of heartier musical stuff. Never mind, Ride are gonna beat yo ass. When they catch up with Hawkwind on their 1000 copies reunion single called "Coming Up For Air" you are gonna forget your ass ever knew the Ride Grasshipper.

Did I mention The Who? "Sell Out" anyone? "Silas Stingy"? God I've wanted to play that for fucking weeks now.

Welcome brits to the U.S. west coast drunk at 3:49 AM

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

Colonel Poo? You out there?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway what I was trying to say is I couldn't give a flying fuck about Slade, either.

Thanx

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

Bimble, all you need to know about LJ is that he's one crazy customer :D :D :D :D so get ready for some madnessssss!!!!! ;-)

The Reverend, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

I am intrigued by this single you speak of. Haven't heard of it before. If it so belittles Grasshopper I'm led to assume it's a fairly mighty creation.

Rev, that was PARODY FFS >:(

;-)

:D:D:D:D:D:D

into the meta vortex of embarrassment we sail

Just got offed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

The Reverend, Saturday, 31 May 2008 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

keythkeyth, Saturday, 31 May 2008 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

RabiesAngentleman, Saturday, 31 May 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

who is the true king of this genderless music, ben gibbard or chris martin?

as much as i'm indifferent toward coldplay...... i'd take em over death cab/postal service crap any day. that new death cab single, maaaan what a load of crap, "i will possess your heart" ????? FUCK. makes me want to kill. at least coldplay you can at least detect influences from prime u2, bunnymen, eno, etc. etc. (however watered down it may be)
