I'm putting together a 80s compilation with nostalgic tone. So far I'm thinking about: Ultravox- Reap the Wild Wind, Suburban Lawns- Anything, Orange Juice- Rip It Up, Wild Swans- I'm a Lighthouse, Stranglers- Strange Little Girl, Human League- Open Your Heart, Kondo Masahiko- Dream Lady, Bill Nelson- Do You Dream In Color, Dalek I- Dalek I Love You, Mecano- No Pintamos Nada, Mike Oldfield- Wonderland, Freur- DootDoot, Nena- 99 Red Balloons, Eurythmics- Love Is A Stranger, My Mine- Hypnotic Tango, SSQ- Jet Town, and Etienne Daho- Epaule Tatoo. Anyone have any suggestions for oher songs, or should I get rid of any of these?

Nostalgia's a very personal thing, isn't it? I would have to have West End Girls on there, I was thinking about this song the other day and realised that it really stands out among their catalogue (along with a couple of others).

Michael Flack, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how does deethelurker rate this 80s compilation?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

'Pop Music', 'Down In The Park' & 'Video Killed The Radio Star' (at least) were all released before 1980

pedantic fuxor, Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I'm duly impressed by this compilation. I'm really happy they've decided to include more obscure tracks than any other '80s comp I've seen -- I'm especially excited by Passions' "Im In Love With A German Filmstar", "Feels Like Heaven" by Fiction Factory, and Fad Gadget's "Back To Nature". And not ONE but TWO Japan songs and not one of them is from Tin Drum! AND they're actually putting on the kick-ass version of "Planet Earth"! AND one of Talk Talk's greatest songs ever (IMHO), "Today"! And "To Cut A Long Story Short"! And Visage! Altered Images! "Love On Your Side"! They obv angled to make Disc 3 the "Ah, why the heck not?" disc, what with Haysi Fantayzee's "Shiny Shiny", Landscape's "Einstein A Go Go", and Toyah's "It's A Mystery" on it. And, um, Marilyn. But hey, when the weakest link on a comp is someone that underrepresented by '80s comps before it, the comp has got to be really, really good.

And yes, "pedantic fuxor", there are songs on this comp that are from pre-1980 -- the ones you named are from 1979, sure -- but I thought they didn't become big hits until 1980 or 1981.

This compilation is amazing. I am verklempt. I want.

AND the 12" version of "Torch"! Yep, looks great.
