"The Middle" has an excellent hook and a pop-perfect message. Popular rock can be cool. What is the last popular rock record you bought, enjoyed?

I don't think the nu-rockers count. They're marketed as indie, and all. Tho I'm not to sure about the rift between indie and popular rock'n'roll in da UK & elsewhere, I gather it's diff'rent.

So, new dont-say-thestrokes answers, please.

How are you defining popular? Played on Clear Channel radio stations or on MTV or MTV2? Or are you using the word popular to mean "generally assumed by music nerds to not be any good"? Or some other sense?
My choice, of arguable popularity: Since I Left You, by the Avalanches (I saw their video on MTV2 last night when I was flipping through the channels at like 2 AM, so I'll count it) was really enjoyable in the "love at first listen" sense. I only just got the album, so I'm not sure how long that will last, but I adore it right now.

What about the Vines- are they considered nu (garage) rock & so can't be mentioned? (; Get Free is pretty catchy, but then again my musical taste was warped by years of grunge in high school.

pOpUlAr = marketed by major labels toward the masses, if it doesn't go platinum it's probably a letdown, gets major airplay for its demographic, you'll see the t-shirt at the mall

Everyone on this board probably heard of the Strokes when they released their demo on Rough Trade. The White Stripes haf not yet released anything on a major. The Vines are kinda second-gen nu-rock, ain't they? It counts, but it's not so deep a confession.

'bleed american' has a GREAT riff, and is a really well-produced pop record...
