Jesus, what a helluva run. Tempted to vote for "This is England," which doesn't get mentioned often as one of The Clash's best singles.

Goddamn these things are STILL going?

"Surfin' Bird" VERY easily. BEYOND easily. And waaaaay better than that other profane Sacred Text “Louie Louie” by virtue of being faster and more protean.

Kudos to Richard Meltzer, John Waters, Stanley Kubrick, Seth MacFarlane, and gawd knows who else for loving it so well.

Okay, this one impossible. Voting for one of these; just not sure which one yet:

102 1966 Bobby Fuller Four I fought the law
105 1960 Shirelles Will you love me tomorrow
107 1978 Clash White man in Hammersmith Palais
111 1961 Dion Runaround Sue
112 1961 Dion The wanderer
115 1964 Martha and the Vandellas Dancing in the street
116 1962 Drifters Up on the roof
119 1963 Trashmen Surfin' bird
121 1962 Rivingtons Papa-oom-mow-mow
124 1972 B.J. Thomas Rock roll lullaby

On the other hand, I've always kind of hated CCR's "Proud Mary" (though I love the band a lot, and love the Ike and Tina version -- go figure.) And I've really never understood what people hear in "This Is England."

Actually, I'm gonna go with "The Wanderer," I think. (And I'll probably change my mind as soon as I vote.)

xhuxk, Friday, 5 March 2010 15:20 (fourteen years ago) link

And I've really never understood what people hear in "This Is England."

Strummer's singing (he sounds genuinely frightened), those guitar breaks, the background vocals, the lyrics.

Tough one but I've opted to be the lone vote for "Green Onions," as it's the truth.

T Bone Streep (Cave17Matt), Friday, 5 March 2010 15:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Up On The Roof, because everyone else is voting for everything else.

As these get harder, the only way for me to choose is to think, which one gets stuck playing in my head for the rest of the day after reading over the list one time? So this round it's "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" barely over "Green Onions."

Hervé Grillechaise (WmC), Friday, 5 March 2010 15:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm with T Bone Creep and Green Onions

woodleywise, Friday, 5 March 2010 15:48 (fourteen years ago) link

For me this method suggests "I Fought the Law", so that.

o. nate, Friday, 5 March 2010 16:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Almost missed this one...I'm another Creedence lover who feels totally indifferent to "Proud Mary" (and who actively dislikes Ike & Tina's corny bombast). Once again, a lot of great songs I used up years ago. I like "This Is England," but not enough to vote for it. (I hope, and assume, "Complete Control"'s still to go.) I'll vote for "I Fought the Law," even though I think "Let Her Dance" is Bobby Fuller's greatest single. One of the two Dion songs--I always forget which one until I double-check--was #1 the day I was born.

clemenza, Friday, 5 March 2010 20:25 (fourteen years ago) link

"Please Say You Want Me," with "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" right behind it.

Please Do Not Swagga Jack Me (Matos W.K.), Friday, 5 March 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago) link

(I hope, and assume, "Complete Control"'s still to go.)

Nope, [spoiler alert] "This Is England" is the highest-ranking Clash record on the list. Other Clash record besides that and "Hammersmith" was "London Calling" at #173.

"If I Could Build My Whole World Around You" over "White Man."

Fitzcarraldo, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 00:28 (fourteen years ago) link

It's always amused me how the Trashmen arrived at "Surfin'..." for no reason at all, other than to jump on a trend. Two years earlier, they woulda called it "Twistin' Bird", and maybe "Psychedelic Bird" in '67 and "Disco Bird" in '76 and it'd still be the same idiotic noise, and I'd still vote for it.

Well, that's a surprising result. I loved "White Man" in summer '78, but it hasn't worn well for me. Sounds messy and whiney now.

Honestly figured "Surfin' Bird" (which I probably should have voted for) would take this. Shows what I know.

Shows that you don't know about the bird!

had i bothered voting i'd have definitely gone with "surfin' bird", KJB totally OTM about it upthread

im armond white btw (donna rouge), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Didn't vote, but would have voted "White Man" way over "Bird," though "Bird" has the greater lyric.
