I love both LPs so much, and was very surprised to see that I was the only one even mentioning it here. Does anyone else enjoy it?

I do not. Clever name, though.

kelpolaris, Saturday, 8 May 2010 04:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Bummer if this fizzles out already.

Evan, Saturday, 8 May 2010 13:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Yup... I seem to constantly have bad luck here.

Evan, Saturday, 8 May 2010 17:40 (thirteen years ago) link

you might want to post something like this on the Rolling Indie thread -- if an indie artist isn't one of the bigger names, you'll have more luck there

ksh, Saturday, 8 May 2010 18:05 (thirteen years ago) link

also, it's a Saturday, so ILX is gonna be slow

OK, out of weird curiosity, are you from Denver? I walked into my local record store today and apparently this guy, whom I've never heard of before in my life, has posters for his next album release. He's playing the 19th for free, I'm considering going for tha chixxxxxx.... good choice?

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 03:20 (thirteen years ago) link

xp I don't just mean one poster, he had them fucking everywhere, like this is some big deal I was supposed to be aware of

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 03:20 (thirteen years ago) link

That guy died recently, didn't he?

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 04:09 (thirteen years ago) link

if so, do not buy tickets

"...has posters for his next album release. He's playing the 19th for free, I'm considering going for tha chixxxxxx.... good choice?"

His latest album release? It came out a month or less ago. Yes good choice, chixxx love Tallest Man, and tall men. And I'm from NJ. You were asking me, right?

Evan, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 04:47 (thirteen years ago) link

like this guy a lot

not super crazy about his lyrics but he's got the most amazing feel for melody and momentum of any of the current wave of indie folkster dudes, his best songs are just unstoppable once they get going

ciderpress, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 04:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, yeah I was asking you. I asked that before looking him up, I assumed he was a local artist (lokes always play free concerts at our record stores, as they probably do at yours) and just wondering if this was in response to the fucking tsunami of flyers they have plastered advertising this event all over the place.

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 04:50 (thirteen years ago) link

though i take umbrage at his name since i've got a good six inches on him probably

ciderpress, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 04:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah, he really is becoming very popular. Once he got the famed highest honor of Best New Music 8.5 for his last record, the New York show in April sold out quick.

Evan, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 04:58 (thirteen years ago) link

He did a back to back with all of us before he chose his name I guess he missed you cider.

not my favorite, but decent. I like first lp better. Although i love "You're Going Back"

chrisv2010, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah the first LP feels much more effortless, despite not really changing his sound at all.

I'm surprised the EP 'Sometimes the blues is just a passing bird' didn't get a mention here. Kind of prefer this melancholy stuff more than the first two LPs. This particularly:

Based on a few descriptions of this guy and hearing one song from a previous album, I expected to really hate this. But goddamn if this new one isn't really fantastic.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 8 October 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

Last one was my AOTY of 2010, an opinion that hasn't changed two years on, but I'm still struggling to feel anything stronger than "eh, it's nice" re: the new one.

First album is still classic to me, second album is a bit overwrought in hindsight despite the formula being pretty untouched. Haven't listened to the recent one.

New song:

Sounds like, I dunno, Peter Bjorn and John or something.

That shit right there is precedented. (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 24 February 2015 20:35 (nine years ago) link

I love this new track so much. The little slide he does sounds so perfect.

A longer bit about the new project is here, including a solo version of the song:

Saw him last night at the Herbst theater in SF. Kind of an odd show. Everyone was seated, and there are no drinks allowed in the theater, so the crowd was incredibly subdued, which was awkward. You could literally hear people whispering when he stopped playing, it was so quiet. This was compounded by him being the only thing on stage (no band on this tour). Dude can PLAY, though. He was doing crazy finger-picking with his right hand while tapiing out a solo on the fret board with his left hand. It sounded beautiful. And he can also sing. I'm glad I went, but I would have preferred if he had brought a band, or if the crowd had gotten more boisterous and started clapping along or something.

I saw him play solo for cheap back during the Wild Hunt tour. Can confirm that he can play like a motherfucker. Pretty intimate venue, lots of detectable swooning in the audience.

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 28 November 2018 19:43 (five years ago) link

He got catcalled by both women and men, which was sorta funny.

DJI, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 21:01 (five years ago) link

I also saw him play solo during the Wild Hunt tour and I was one of the people doing the swooning (and yes, he's a great singer and player, too).

I wonder if he is a fan of Mike Cooper, this song sounds so similar to one of his:
