If you like Sleeper...

Well, thinking back to that wonderfully entertaining Sleeper thread from last month, I though I would mention Mice. Mice were a one album band fronted by Julianne Regan of All About Eve, uh, fame. Anyway, they put out an album called "...Because I Can" in 1996, sounds pretty much exactly like Sleeper, I guess Regan is technically a better singer though. Anyway, if you are getting pangs of i dunnno, longing? for the good old days of britpop, you might want to check it out. I notice on amazon.co.uk that it was re-issued ealry this year with some bonus tracks as "New and Improved" by Julianne Regan & Mice. Anyway...

maybe this should have been under a thread title like "pull some random thing out that you have not listened to in forever and talk about it"...

Do you really think anyone would admit to it?

I bought a Mice single once.

I was amazed at how dull it was, and perturbed that anyone would want to form a Sleeper rip-off band, when Sleeper were by that stage either defunct or well in decline.

wasn't it funny the way the woman from Sleeper only had one facial expression?

Blimey, Julianne Regan - they're talking about Pete Murphy on the Mercury Prize thread. So what's Wayne Hussey up to nowadays?

Surely Louise Wener has two facial expressions, the pouty scowl and the pouty scowl baring her teeth? Then again, perhaps you're right. From that link I see she's written a book, and the Amazon abstract is "Danny McQueen's day job in the local specialist video shop is only a way to pay the rent until his band makes it big. But his girlfriend has given him an ultimatum: get a recording contract, a proper job or a new girlfriend. Suddenly it seems the one thing that's important is the one he'll lose." I appreciate that it's a good idea to write about what you know, but has she never left Camden?

Touring.

God, I'd forgotten how much fucking Sleeper pissed me off. Look at the "customer review" on the Amazon page for Wener's book. Here's a hint for publishers and authors' partners: if you're going to write a vacant puff-piece masquerading as an actual review, at least wait until the book's published if you want the vaguest whiff of authenticity.

Thanks Ned, I was completely unaware of that comeback. I hope the Eskimos are having a reunion.

i found my Britpop Now! video the other day, searching for dr strangelove. threw it on (menswear! gene! powder!). back in those days, i liked inbetweener, you know, a 14-year old's gentle introduction to the world of alternative music. principal thoughts this time round were "this is fucking terrible... but at leat you can see her nips through her shirt."

And Tracy Tracy, where's she now? And Andrea Darling Bud and Nod from ver Nef, in fact everyone who appeared in MM in 1988: where are they RIGHT NOW?

I agree - this is a Key Question

the pinefox, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, where are they? School Disco could start an Alternative Night. On Tuesdays, with cheap snakebite and black.
