The band have finished work on their third album, due for release mid- to late summer of 2010. The album is being produced by Markus Dravs, who produced their previous album, 2007's Neon Bible and engineered by Marcus Paquin, who has also previously worked with the band.

These two new songs are surprisingly good, nothing of the irritating drama queen-theatrics of The Neon Bible.

completely co-sign w/ zeus - digging the (comparatively) laid-back nature of these new tunes.

ksh, love you dude, but you don't need to prove yr indie burnout in every thread. i mean, the last BSS rec was just as dull as this most recent one or the first one and it'll likely be ditto for the AF. i'm all in for people doubting on the hype darlins, but you shouldn't have to show how much you've grown in the last 6 months at every turn. honestly sorry if that sounds bitchy though.

underwater, please (bear, bear, bear), Friday, 28 May 2010 04:51 (sixteen years ago)

Despite the dullness of the two previewed tracks, I still hold out hopes for the album. And I hope the bonkers tracklisting is true.

Freedom, Friday, 28 May 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

The "bonkers track-listing" is not true.

sean gramophone, Friday, 28 May 2010 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

Who's up for doing a No Line On The Horizon on that track listing? I for one would like to hear Yeah Toast brought to life (w/ glockenspiel and sousaphone).

Veðrafjǫrðr heimamaður (ecuador_with_a_c), Friday, 28 May 2010 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

it would be hard to write a song called "Neighbourhood #5 (Hockey)" that wasn't totally awesome

We listened to this twice driving back from Key West, for the benefit of a skeptic. Still sucked.

New album is projected to be released late in 2013. Ample time to prepare for the obnoxiousness of AF fans.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 25 October 2012 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

AF fans don't seem all that obnoxious to me. Animal Collective fans and Decemberists fans can fuck right off, though.

Bout to go Jethro TULL on that ass (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 25 October 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

Decemberists still have fans?

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 25 October 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

Sure, and they're worse now because you know they're die hard about it.

Bout to go Jethro TULL on that ass (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 25 October 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

"The band (AF) had to leave their old studio, a church, because the roof collapsed, but they have a new space that's coming together as they work."
I sense an adventurous change of sound.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 17 May 2014 12:07 (twelve years ago)

I for one agree. At first I was dismissive of the middle section of the album (the section from Half Light to Deep Blue), but after repeated listening I feel like the songs there are really strong.

intheblanks, Saturday, 17 May 2014 17:10 (twelve years ago)

Me too. Always hated the band but that album somehow struck something in me. They captured a pretty specific elegiac vibe

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 17 May 2014 18:09 (twelve years ago)

two years pass...

Playing this for the first time since the last time I posted - so, two years ago, more or less - and I still think this is their masterpiece. Hitting some songs in the middle I forgot about, like Half Light II and Suburban War, and they remain super powerful, imo. The rest of the album, too, songs like "We Used to Wait" and "The Sprawl" and "City With No Children" are just great melancholy anthems.

It's basically the album "Neon Bible" wanted to be but the band wasn't ready for yet. They needed to get a little more experience and a little more distance away from "Funeral." Conversely, I think the cynical meta-dance "Zooropa" wannabe last album was a tad premature in its attitude and vibe, which maybe means the next one will be a winner, too.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 14:42 (nine years ago)

Man, I hope you're right. I liked Reflektor fine when it came out, but in retrospect it seems to be mostly filler. tbh I find the Will Butler record from last year more enjoyable. And though I know this is a stupid metric, the AF media presence during and after Reflektor irritated me, and as a result I'm fairly cynical about whether they'll produce anything great next time around.

That said, I think you're otm about The Suburbs. A lot of that record is really poignant and beautiful, and unlike Reflektor, the deep cuts that you forget about are actually really solid songs.

intheblanks, Thursday, 30 June 2016 00:42 (nine years ago)

Yeah, that's what I meant by Zooropa (just as a loose comparison, since Zooropa is a great, great record). It was around that time that U2 flirted with "irony," which was a false construct, since Achtung Baby and I think Zooropa both contain some of their darkest and most creative music. It was the MacPhisto etc. media campaign that was what was so annoying c. that era of U2, reaching its apex around "Pop" (which is also a surprisingly dark record at times). Arcade Fire c. the last one flirted with that U2 model too much, with glitter suits and big heads and sort of this We Are Pretending to Be Pop Stars vibe.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 30 June 2016 01:35 (nine years ago)

this is a listless record done better by a half dozen early eighties Rush songs about the 'burbs, not to mention Cheever.
