this young band from montreal is awesome. i've listened to the new album at least three times and i still don't know what's going on. it's like the quieter parts of american don era don-cab with joanna newsom-esque vocals.

anyone heard?

I saw them live two years ago, sounded like a straight animal collective rip off band, but I remember enjoying them. Can't say much beyond that.

I haven't been able to track down the Braids album even in Montreal, although it is supposedly out. One of the girls from the band is also in side project Blue Hawaii which is wonderful and sort of balearic at times.

apparently they are releasing it in january, on flemish eye of women and chad vangaalen fame. cutty will have quite some bragging rights when it finally gets out though

Lemonade is astounding live. Glass Deers is also a favourite.

If you like the vocals, Tim, you should just out Blue Hawaii, who I stanned for fairly strongly last year - it's the lead singer's side project with one or two other members of Braids.

great.. not as great as the blooming summer ep but raphaelle's voice remains wondrous and once you get used to the sonics of the new lp it's pretty great.

New braids album is very very very pretty.

If people like the lyrics of Braids, then check out Azeda Booth's album from 2008, In Flesh Tones. Braids reportedly repeatedly played this album on their tour with Baths, causing him to change his lyrical aproach on his latest album, Obsidian. Azeda Booth is also from Calgary, like Braids. It's probably fair to say they've been a pretty big inspiration. Both bands are brilliant, and I'm looking forward to this new album.

Tim - where are you hearing it? review copy or....elsewhere.

Loving Flourish // Perish. Very much in the vein of 90s Earwig / Insides and less obtuse than fellow Canadians Oen Sujet.

one of my fave records this year. don't love some of the lyrics (e.g. miniskirt) but its a gorgeous record. seeing them this Saturday in Singapore and looking forward.

"Miniskirt" is... surprising.

Tim F, Monday, 13 July 2015 06:50 (eight years ago) link

Haven't listened to this since it came out but I remember really digging Taste and Happy When. The last section of the latter is my favorite thing in the entire album, love how the drums are mixed and the melodramatic piano chords that surface every now and then. And her vocalizing there is surprisingly not frustrating for me at all. Raphaelle has a lot of good ideas but they don't always work out too well.

Miniskirt grew on me a ton since its initial release as a single. The lyrics can be understandably grating but something about the part where she lists off words (and the difference in delivery for both herself and men) really got to me after a few listens.

Liking _Shadow Offering_ a ton. One of those albums playing while WFH, that I'm pulled away from work to check track names. "Upheaval II" and "Fear of Men" in particular are lighting up my neurons.
