Plan 9! Let's Hear it For Rhode Island's Finest!

Plan 9 began as one of the most talented & enduring bands in the '80s psychedelic underground revival scene, releasing jems on the Bomp, Midnight, Worry Bird & New Rose labels. Their's was a potent guitar & Farfisa fueled tone world where girls "walk in triplicate" & "have several things in mind" as the walls reverberate with MC5 covers & slightly worn copies of the 'Pebbles' compilations. This hallucinogenic ocean evolved into a crackin' combo where Blue Oyster Cult singes your houseplants after an ayahuasca bender.

For those in the know, Plan 9 is still alive or at least undead. Heck, I'm an avid fan & I had no idea they were still active until recently. They have a number of releases available through their website.: http://www.plan9ri.com/

Any recommendations? I'm from Rhode Island and saw them many years ago in Newport. Frankly, they didn't make much of an impression, but I'd like to revisit them.

I owned Keep Your Cool And Read The Rules in the 80s and it was really great. Sadly it seems to be one of the few ones they don't have for sale on their website?

Lost a lot of vinyl through all the moves...

I think their most solid ElPee is prolly 'Dealing With the Dead.' 'Sea Hunt' is a freaky affair with some semi-prog passages. You might want to avoid 'Ham & Sam Jammin'. 'Frustration,' 'Keep Your Cool & Read the Rules,' and 'I Just Killed an Man, I Don't Want to See Any Meat' are all very good.

Yeah, about that... I'm not sure about the availability of the older releases. I'm sure they have been reissued on CD, but those may be out of print as well.

OPtion mag used to praise the hell out of these guys-- that's how I ended up listening to them.

Another thing. There are 2 bands called Plan 9. DO NOT get anything by the Plan 9 that looks like a Misfits cover band! I mean - they may be OK but its not the one I'm talking about.

AMG doesn't seem to like them, eh? Their "album pick" is Frustration, which gets one and a half stars!

Correction - That IS the Misfits. The label is Plan 9. Or something. I suck.

There's also a Plan 9 from Florida. Avoid.

I empty my nostril in the direction of AMG's opinion on that one.

They had a track on a Roger Corman tribute record too.
