I've heard (and like) the Flood album and the Snail album, but own neither. Haven't heard any of the rest, and don't even know most of these bands.

i kinda like that gallery of mites record. stooge worship like what was coming out of australia in the 80s & 90s.

That sounds promising! One of the bands I've never heard of.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 20:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Monarch - Self Titled

Always-Smells-Like-Maple Man (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Still have the Snail on my CD shelf; pretty sure I still have the Dead Man, Elder, and Gallery Of Mites in storage boxes in the closet. So technically I guess I should pick Snail (since shelf > storage), but I doubt Snail (from 2009) will last as long on my shelves as Gallery Of Mites (from 2003) did. So yeah, I agree Gallery Of Mites is your best bet. (Had thought George Smith reviewed it for the Voice when I was there, but I'm not finding his review via Google, so maybe not.)

I like (OWN) the gallery of mites album myself, but it is no contest MONARCH!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I know nothing of Monarch or Dystopia; tell me what they're like and why they are better than late 80s Australian Stooges worshipers.

I don't want to waste a free disc and will be getting the one that win's the poll.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Do you like Corrupted or Whitehorse? If so, Monarch! are for you, female "singer" too.

Hailing from the picturesque Northern Basque Country of France, MONARCH! unleash a slow motion avalanche of impossibly glacial, blackened sludge and hypnotic feedback, each song a series of epic tarpit riffage stretched out eternally over lumbering drums and the cavernous rumble of speaker cabinets. Over these yawning expanses of black void appears the demonic, throat-shredding shrieks and ghostly singing of Emilie, whose petite appearance belies one of the harshest throats in the underground Doom spectrum. Beyond heavy. MONARCH!’s mega-crawling ambient doom/drone/sludge follows in the grand tradition of fellow tarpit adventurers Melvins, Corrupted, Noothgrush, and Black Sabbath, and accompany their music with an iconoclastic design style that decorates their material with deceptively cute imagery drawing from the collective influence of Sanrio, Japanese animation, European graffiti, weirdo hardcore, and skateboard culture.

That sounds like it isn't quite up my alley - I tend to shy away from blackened sludge - but as the listening club has shown me, there is stuff within every genre I'd like if I gave it a shot.

monarch are one of those bands that i would like to like, and feel i should like due to the like of other respectable ppl, but just can't actually enjoy. too bleak and forbidding.

I still really enjoy the Dead Man - Euphoria album. Looking forward to hearing something new from the likes of them and Graveyard.

definitely human = garbage.

metal-archives lyrical themes:
Misanthropy, Politics, Nihilism, Drugs

what more do you need?

original bgm, Thursday, 3 June 2010 05:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, if you like crusty hardcore, you'd probably like these guys.

original bgm, Thursday, 3 June 2010 05:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Monarch. I like that band.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 3 June 2010 08:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Monarch run tings although I had to look up what one they meant by 'self-titled' - I think they mean '666'

I saw Solace some time back and they were pretty good

taqsim for Gaffney (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 3 June 2010 08:56 (thirteen years ago) link

It is 666 the 2xCD also known as self titled.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Monarch it is. I'll report back on this thread once I have it and let you know what I think.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:13 (thirteen years ago) link

It's terrific but I guess it might not be your thing.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll find out - just placed the order. It's free, and if I don't like it I'll get some money for it at the local store. I'm trying to be open-minded and give it a fair shot.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:33 (thirteen years ago) link

It's damn great.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm more excited by the new stuff and back catalog hole-fillers I ordered; new Ufomammut & Samsara Blues Experiment cds, and Spirit Caravan's Dreamwheel and Cathedral's The Ethereal Mirror.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Eve is great. You certainly wont be disappointed with that.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I've heard it but my local shop can't get me a copy. It kicks ass, as does everything else they've done.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:39 (thirteen years ago) link

http://www.allthatisheavy.com/info.asp?item_num=ATH-7838 is good. I will order it from rocket recordings (invada sub label) though when i have the cash.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:40 (thirteen years ago) link

wow this http://www.allthatisheavy.com/info.asp?item_num=ATH-7837 is expensive. I'll make do with my southern lord 1st reissue.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link

That White Hills/Gnod thing looks cool.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:54 (thirteen years ago) link

In addition to getting Monarch for free, they threw in a 2 disc sampler from their record label, Meteor City. And wrote a nice thank you on the receipt. Love these people.
