Search/Destroy: The Shop Assistants

The Shop Assistants. Who were they? I hear about them in the context of their flying the flag for real indie music at some point in the '80s, but I've no idea what they sound like or what records (if any) they released.

So what should be searched out and what destroyed?

The Dirty Vicar, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Search plenty. Destroy? I don't think they did anything bad enough to destroy. But the absolute pinnacle of their achievement, the track that puts them into pop history no matter what, is SOMEWHERE IN CHINA. Dreamy, nostalgic, echoing, polysemic, mysterious, jangly, whispering, astonishing every time.

the pinefox, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A little goes a long way, but I like 'em. Search for "Train from Kansas City" and " Caledonian Road" from the album. Can't remember the title.

Dr. C, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A bit like the Ronettes fronting the Jesus and Mary Chain. The template for every good indie girl band from Tiger Trap to the Aislers Set. Far better than most of the C86 stuff they get lumped in with. Get the self titled green album if you can find it.

kate the saint, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Which C86 stuff do you mean, Kate? It's not unreasonable to think of the Shop Assistants as a C86 band since they were on C86. But then I'm never really sure what people mean when they say "C86 stuff" because the phrase can mean mid 80s UK guitar music including A Witness, Bogshed and Stump (all were on the comp) but seems just as often to mean slightly later indie acts.

I can think of five bands off the top of my head who were on C86 and who I prefer to the Shop Assistants, incidentally. I think past "Somewhere In China" and "Safety Net" the Shop Assistants are not worth the effort, all the songs seem like inferior versions of those two.

Tim, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Girl band vocals over fuzz guitar - kind of like a (intro) Fuzzbox (outro) who didn't sell out. I live the sound of this. Thanks Kate.

The Dirty Vicar, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Can't this be Search and Destroy Shop Assistants?

Search: A friendly bloke at MVC in Romford who commended me for my Sly & The Family Stone purchase (I like being flattered)

Destroy: Beardy blokes in the Camden Record Exchange, who seemed to be snorting at everyone's purchase.

DG, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Tim, that was a joke- a snarcky comment based on my long-standing hatred of twee.

I actually do love a great deal of C86, cause clearly- I'm a huge Shop Assistants fan- but then if I had a pound for every time someone says "C86, Sarah records, etc." and proceed to list a dire pit of wibbling that starts with the Trembling Blue Stars and ends with Belle and Sebastian.

kate the saint, Tuesday, 1 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm not sure that Belle & Sebastian should be lumped in with other bands either.

Let me rephrase that: Belle & Sebastian should not be lumped in with other bands. They centre on a songwriter whose intuitive grasp of melody is the best in the UK that I'm aware of. I like the Shop Assistants, and might (or might not) like some of the other bands that Kate doesn't really mention, but I don't think that the same claims can be made for any of them that can be made for B&S.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 1 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You know, no matter what genre it is, someone is going to complain that Their Favourite Band should not be lumped in with it- eg, me with Shop Assistants, and you with B&S.

You know, I don't even mind B&S. I own most of their albums, and I do listen to them more than occasionally. But the fact remains I have never met a N&S *FAN* that I have liked. Sure, I have many friends who have the same feeling towards them, like them, think their songwriting and musicianship is good... however, people who LOVE them to the point of naming their screen-names, cats, clubs after them ANNOY me to the point where I start to hold it against the band.

Methinks this is a new thread, actually...

kate the saint, Wednesday, 2 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've yet to meet a B & S *fan* I didn't like. It's all been rather pleasant.

Tom, Wednesday, 2 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Kate - your opinion is fine and all that, I'm not having a go at it. But I might add that B&S are not my Favourite Band. I have always thought that many people overrate them. I just think that they are distinct from the stew into which you wanted to throw them, for their unusual melodic quality if nothing else. If you want to make a case for the Shop Assistants (whom I also like) being distinct from such a stew, fair enough. The more cases that can be made for the distinctive qualities of bands, the better. Perhaps.

I think I damaged my hearing and vocal chords listening to that one a few months ago on repeat.

my favorite track of theirs is the "Train from Kansas City" cover (actually the one on the Sounds(I think it was Sounds) 7" giveaway is even better).

mike a (mike a), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes! Two things great about "The Big 'E' Power" (Avalanche Records): 1.) It's not about ex, 2.) It's not sung by the original pretty-voiced singer. The Trouser Press record guide says the bassist took over vocals in '89, and her voice is just trembling, barely holding its own against the almighty E-chord barrage. But she sounds triumphant: "Are you ready to take a stand, to make your dreams come true?"

A friend taped me an album called "Will Anything Happen," which compiles most of the songs mentioned here along with "All Day Long" and other instant classics. Whether they were proto-riot-grrrl or post-Jesus and Mary Chain, they pretty much defined a sound that's been dipped into by everyone from Heavenly to Slumber Party. Somebody reissue them, please.

Search - only the first 2 eps. By the time they'd signed to the major & done the album with the requisite beefed up sound there wasn't much charm left. For a good example of how to do the Shop Assistants thing with a bigger budget & better studio see the Primitives.

I'm going insane. I've got a Shop Assistants song stuck in my head, but I've no idea which one.

Lyrics go "I'm so bored, what can I do? I'm so bored, here we go again!" and there's a trumpet in the background, and I know it's on Will Anything Happen, but I can't remember the title of it, and googling does me no good because the only site I can find has a track listing, but no lyrics...

Help me! I've actually got a bet riding on this.

Is it "All That Ever Mattered"? Is it "Caledonian Road"? I can't actually remember!

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 17 March 2008 13:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't think I liked 'Train From Kansas City' that much, but actually the lead guitar at the end is pretty hard and heavy. And it struck me as the song reached its platform that 'Train From Wycombe' might have been written as some kind of dim homage to that title.

Listening to this lost Motorcycle Boy album, Scarlet and it's really gorgeous!

The singles after "Big Rock Candy Mountain" were underwhelming, but work much better on the album.

A shame it was never properly released. Alex's voice, lovely but filled with forlorn gravitas, is so good on virtually everything she ever recorded.
