This is devastating news. He had a tremendous impact on so many lives as a musician and as a teacher.

sad to hear this. saw him w/ cecil taylor and tony oxley a few years ago in london - not an entirely successful trio, but dixon was def. doing something quite individual, even beautiful - a very minimal, breathy, sustained tone that was in stark contrast to the other two geezers.

love CONQUISTADOR; shame so many of the recordings under his own name are out of print

Such a great musician - I'm really gonna miss this guy.

Yeah - he was still at it and going strong too. :/

Yeah I saw that trio: Cecil with a percussionist like Oxley can go together v easily (as documented again and again on those FMP Berlin discs), and its maybe too easy, after 40 years or more.

Dixon bought something that didn't quite work, but kept everyone on their toes (akin to a Tristan Honsinger).

memorial broadcast. right now it sounds like an interview. i'm a newcomer to his music, but this brodacast (going on for the last 24 hours, at least) is amazing.. affecting music.

Wow, for a second I thought of Bill Nelson, which would have been super-weird, since I've been doing a lot of listening to Bebop Deluxe.

can't wait until sonny rollins dies so you can pop up and tell us you were just listening to black flag

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 17 June 2010 21:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll pop up to tell you I just recorded a barely recognizable set of Black Flag songs as recorded by Sonny Rollins.
