IIIIIII thouuuuuuuuuuuuuughhhht...(zzzzzzzz)...it waaaaaassssssss... (asphyxiating on tureen-sized scoop of soggy three-week-old All- Bran)...Embraaaaaaccccce...(drone, whine) Seriously, it's awful

dave q, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Think of Oasis' "Sunday Morning Call", except with less melody, and slower, and more overproduction, and worse singing.

dave q, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why did you even bother with it? Big fuckin' headline, dave.

Dave225, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

PSA

If even one person is spared the indignity of having to hear Coldplay then this thread will have been worthwhile.

John Darnielle, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Would I get in trouble if I said that I'd rather fistfuck myself than ever listen to Coldplay?

Roger Fascist, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dunno how the NME could give their new single 'Single of the Week',it's sooooo boring, like the NME I suppose.

Paul R, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well I like it, so there...

Admittedly, I like it slightly less each time I hear it, but still.

Zanny G, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i hate the single and i haven't even heard it!

Julio Desouza, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, but Nigel Williamson in Uncut gave it 5 stars so surely it must be great?

mms, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Soggy three week old all bran is the kind of description that fits them perfectly. I was about to say listening to them felt like the aftermath of sitting on something wet, or spilling water down your sleeves when I read that.

Ronan, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dave Q, John Darnielle and Roger Fascist all express their disdain = a triumvirate of hate intent on executing their musical enemies. And this is a good thing!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Am I the only person who hears the intro to "In my place" - or whatever that godawful single of theirs is - and starts singing "Dreams burn down" instead?

Rob M, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I hate the new Coldplay stuff. It's shocking. There's not much more I can say without descending into self-parodic swearing, they're that shit.

Nick Southall, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

All I've heard is the single and I'm quite pleased with it (although that's nothing much, I suppose). As for the album, I'd like to "listen without prejudice" first, but even if it turns out to be a dud I'm certain it will beat Oasis and the rest of the former britpop contingent by a long mile. "Heathen Chemistry" has to be the most sorry excuse for an album in a very long time (or at least since "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants") and Coldplay will never even dream of attaining such a nadir. Now why didn't they just make singles instead? We'd all be better off that way.

Jorge Mourinha, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

And where is Calum Robert to explain to us that our "not getting" Coldplay just proves how utterly, um, "brill" they are? Come now Calum! H.M.R.H.'s honour is at stake!

John Darnielle, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are people in the UK really that concerned with dull bands like Coldplay and Oasis??

Sean, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, the smart people are looking forward to new albums by British artists such as My Computer, Peshay, Max Tundra, Swayzak, Underworld, Death in Vegas, Echoboy, Soft Cell, Medicine 8, Broadway Project, Kate Bush, Calibre, Circulation, Adam Freeland, LAB 4, Larmousse, Lemon D, Oceansize, Photek, Radio 9, Rico, Scorn, They Came from The Stars I Saw Them, Transparent Sound and... when they are finally released..Massive Attack, Bark Psychosis, Elizabeth Fraser, Zan Lyons and Killing Joke.

AND Piss off... Brit-pop/ and shite Lamacq crap such as The Libertines, Supergrass, Ash, Coldplay, Anti-Hero, Miss Black America and their ilk. Can I apologise to overseas listeners in advance for these bands they are soddin national disgrace to Britain.

To answer your question Sean, re: Oasis and Coldplay - unfortunately the media: Radio 1, Xfm, NME, Q, 6 Music etc - give them far to much coverage.

DJ Martian, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's incredibly dull at the moment in the UK, nothing has changed while i have been away in the last three months, no revolutions (not a bad thing because i want to be present when it gets going)...I honestly can't get excited about most of the music Martian has listed, i'd honestly rather watch paint dry (have heard about 2/3 of what he listed).

If a new alb by dullards like massive attack is supposed to get us all excited then it just doesn't matter whether Oasis and Coldplay are top of the charts or whatever because there isn't anything better (this is form Martian's list of course) anyway.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the scientist - u'd better learn 2 love it.

a) cause it's fantastic b) cause it's going to be number 1 forever

Ronan, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

no date announced yet, due sometime in september - maybe october. Keep reading my weblog for the latest.

DJ Martian, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Miss Black America are OK, unless I'm confusing them with somebody else

You know, I'm one of the few people around here that actually thought that "Parachutes" was a brilliant record, but this new one is indefensable. Normally, I chalk up all the hell that they catch on ILM to playa hatin', but I must agree with the mob this time. For one thing, it's horribly overproduced. I loved the relatively quiet, spartan psychadelia of their debut, but now there's an abundance of overcooked strings and synths, plodding guitar riffs and what seems like the same damned drumbeat used for every song. The suprisingly lousy guitar playing really hurts as their debut had a great deal of clean, intricate guitar work, so what the fuck happened here? Maybe it's just me, but since it's been a couple of years since "Parachutes" shouldn't they sound more proficient and not less? The songs themselves don't really seem to be about much of anything, either. But maybe the lyrics ARE really good and I just can't hear them for the loud ass string arangements! There are 2 bright spots, though. "God put a smile upon your face" is beautiful if distant and the chorus to "Daylight" is so sweet that only a Nazi could hate it, but that's about it. This one ain't even a grower, folks. Now they sound like one of these schmaltzy, shitty ass American MOR bands like Default or Lifehouse. Grade=F-/ aka Goddamned Godawful.
