Has anyone heard this yet? I'm not sure if it's out already, or is coming out, a friend told me about it and it's on Forced Exposure's site....

so if you HAVE heard it, what's it like? Vocalcity-ish or what? I've heard at least some of the new material at the show two months ago in NYC, and a lot of it sounded pretty great.

first thoughts on "diskonize me": eh. it simultaneously goes on too long and not long enough. the groove is leaden until about 5 minutes in, and then it ends rather abruptly (for luomo!) @ 7:49. seems more minimal than vocalcity, but certainly in that vein. little effects and dub eddies still intact, but sparser, and - at least on cursory listen - harder edged. not as sproingy/spongey as the previous stuff.

jess, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

that said: minutes 5 through 7:49 are choice. it still seems like a fumbled ball.

"body speaking": nice shuddery vocal that starts 2:30 in. the better tune for sure. minimal chugger. much more of a "full" vocal than anything i've heard him do before. (i'm not sure why, but when he talked about "taking more time" with the vocals i assumed some sort of todd edwards style cut up. there's a bit of that, and while this still couldn't be mistaken for masters at work, it's maybe the closest he's come to a "real" house tune.) i'm vaguely reminded of a more straightforward herbert track. the rhythms seem less complex than on vocalcity by and large. the length - 8:54 - seems to help.

jess, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

also matos, if you are on file pile, i'm going to put these up now.

jess, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

on second thought, these are 15-17 meg files ea so i'll do that over the weekend.

Why do people seem to like Luomo's straight-vocals tracks more? For me, he is such a superb cutter-upper - I mean that he actually does the "deconstructionist" "let's-cut-up-shit,-man" thing *well* and seemingly unforced (or at least un-headupass) - that I love the tracks when the vocals are the most mangled. However much he mangles them, they still sound coherent and sensual, so when I hear him do a straight-up track, it leaves me a little disappointed. I'll still buy this album the day it comes out unheard, though, don't get me wrong.

Can't add much other than state that I love it and it's out.

"Straight vocal thing" - Luomo's songs (at least the ones on Vocalcity; I've yet to hear the new single and fervently look forward to Jess filepiling it) are perhaps the closest that house gets to mantras these days, and the vocal hooks offer themselves as something of a rock to cling to. Having a chant to repeat becomes a sort of self-affirming comfort when you're drowning in swirly dub effects.

That said, I agree that Luomo's vocal manipulation is great - my favourite track on Vocalcity is most days "Synkro", and a good deal of my passion for it stems from the way that the increasingly hypnotic hook ("because you move, the way you move..." etc.) seems to organically assemble itself out of glittering shards of shattered whispers, mumblings and murmurs.

Initial disappointment.... but you must remember that I thought the world began and ended with 'Vocalcity' from the second I heard it, back in Sept 2000, (but.. I'm... losing my edge) and the few fans I know are on these boards. It was the herald of such a tide of tremendous music, so I'm feeling rather cool about these tracks, although I've yet to test it in the A.M. or on the road.

Having said that the live set @ beta lounge promises much for the album.

It's the sixth song in the second hour of my July 6 radio show.

I haven't heard it yet but many have said its getting much closer to Saturday Night Fever Sountrack style....

Thanks Jess!

I think the hard-edged beats are designed to have greater dancefloor impact - Luomo's overly dubby, repetitive arrangements sound great in a dancefloor setting, but the usual lack of a straightforward rhythmic guide (ie. a strong 4/4 beat) would probably be alienating for many.

The tracks sound a bit odd in a standalone context; both worked much better buried within the mix of the US live set that's online, submerged within the amniotic flow of groove-to-groove that you also get on the first album (for all that most tracks are separate there). Based on that set I can really imagine the next album being an explicit late-night disco album (cf. the overt dub tendencies of Vocalcity), sexier and more propulsive and thus necessarily less lustrous and disorienting.

Favourite moment so far: the wordless "oh eugh eh oh" vocals in "Body Speaking".

i've decided i like them a lot better tonite - slightly buzzed and with the sun going down rather than in the middle of the afternoon - than yesterday. i also had to be smoking crack to call it a "straightforward house tune", although they are harder edged/more linear. still don't think they hold up to the best parts of vocalcity, but - like nick - that was such a herald of great stuff for me - 2 years worth so far! - that it might be a bit like trying to jump to the moon from the top of mt everest.

Body Talking is up on GABBA at 128kbps. Just right-click to download.

"the groove is leaden"

This sums up all Luomo stuff for me. But I guess I'm in the minority.

Ben Williams, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I agree that on first listen, they're great but not up to Vocalcity caliber. However, I think I have the same problem with Luomo tracks that I have with less aggressive jazz: they're so smooth and easy to listen to that they kind of slide past me the first few times. It's only when I've completely internalized them that I appreciate how perfectly placed everything is.

Vocalcity was "grower" music of the best sort -- music that grows on you not because you've conquered any complexity, but because you've adjusted to a new sensibility.

it's probably already been said already but this bassline...

"Digitize Me," more like. Still prefer this version of "Body Speaking," but my 12" is warped.

Anyone know what's up with catalogs of Force Inc. and its subsidiaries?

Force Tracks, what happened? Playhouse, what happened? Don't think anyone picked up their distribution after they both folded. DJ Koze did reissue the Isolee records, but that's a drop in the bucket.

This guy bought Mille Plateaux (maybe including Force Tracks?), put out some crummy music, and made a lot of people angry. Not sure if he still has the rights or not?

Glad this thread got bumped. I've been jamming Diskonize Me pretty hard lately. It flew under my radar way back when. A friend just introduced me to it, which led to a Vocalcity / Present Lover late night jam where my friends and I were singing all the songs.

Luomo's hits were so high. I have faith that Sasu will hit that mark again someday, though his recent efforts don't bolster that hope too much. I love the dude for what he has done. His music fit my life like a glove during my early 20s. Bless him and his side projects.

Vladislav Delay reissued some of his older Force Inc/Mille Plateaux stuff on his own HUUME label, but looks like that one isn't active anymore, either.
