Could someone please explain this album to me? I find it both infuriating and compelling, and I've got to write a review of it eventually so I need help deciding whether I like it or not.

(don't tell me what I should write, but how I should listen to the album)

The music, incidentally, is kinda like a combination of elements of Indian tabla-based music, Position Normal, Aphex Twin's Richard D. James album and Mouse On Mars. ie. weird baby aliens chanting in Japanese over disjointed tabla anti-rhythms and sweet/bizarre melodies.

I've only heard a couple of their tracks ("Hana" and Nigatsu"), and I find them quite inaccessible (mainly due to the rhythmic "disjointedness" as you put it...)

A collection of beautiful sounds, arranged so aggressively, and with such staccato abruptness, as to render them unenjoyable.

Their music does leave me with the feeling that I could grow to "get" it, although I probably haven't got the patience / time at the moment.

Good luck with the review!

Timely thread revival, bob. I saw this in a store at lunchtime today, festooned with choice quotes from the music press reviews, of the "you've never heard anything quite like this" variety. Hmmm, I thought.

You probably haven't, but music can be distinct without being compelling. I haven't returned to the album after the first week of play.

Tim - did you write that review eventually?
if so, is it anywhere to be seen on the net?

i find Asa-Chang & J both "distinct" and "compelling"
(& have played some of their tracks in my radio shows),
so i'm kinda curious to see what was your opinion in the end...

This album is ridonkcuosly great ... it's like Can or something, it feels ahead of me right now. It's old and futuristic and wow.

Hana is the best track of the 00s and you had all better be voting for it

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 28 September 2019 18:56 (four years ago) link

It’s one of those rare tracks with basically no parallels in any genre

"minna no jun ray" is the album to pick up if you can.

HOLY SHIT.

i have been trying to remember the name of this group for years....was obsessed with Jun Ray Song Chang for the first year or two of undergrad studies, gave the CD to someone, and have had weird reminiscences of "Hana" ever since. for years i thought i was just remembering something poorly from the Popp/Toyoda "So" collaboration or a Tujiko Noriko track, but no...this exists. first time I've heard "Hana" in more than ten years, certainly. blowing my mind.

Dammit, it is with great disappointment that ISSUE announces that ASA-CHANG & Junray have canceled their U.S. tour due to personal complications.

This sucks, also they don't seem to have made the top 100 tracks of the 2000s, which is wrong and bad.
