I voted for Vegas. I don't know why. Despite a personal abhorence to gambling and overindulgence, I just think it's a catchy tune.

Teenage Dream and Hot N Cold are definitely tier 1 katy perry singles. then california gurls and vegas and i don't really care for any of the others

WTF at people still hating on IKAG but somehow liking other songs by Perry. I don't entirely believe it.

She has two truly great songs and then theres a huge gap.

1. IKAG
2. Hot N' Cold
3. California Gurls
4. Teenage Dream
5. Ur So Gay
6. Waking up in Vegas
7. Thinking of You
8. Firework

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:39 (seven years ago) Permalink

"i kissed a girl" is like the most bloodless, turgid piece of shit ever

max skim (k3vin k.), Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:49 (seven years ago) Permalink

yes, it lacks the deep soul of a heartfelt masterpiece like Waking Up in Vegas.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:49 (seven years ago) Permalink

Waking Up in Vegas at least has some cool musical parts. IKAG fails in every category.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:51 (seven years ago) Permalink

yeah i stopped short of accusing any of her great songs of having like, humanity or something, but when she's on she can at least sound like she's having fun - "waking up in vegas" is wasily her best chorus too; IKAG always sounded like a drag to me

xp

max skim (k3vin k.), Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:53 (seven years ago) Permalink

IKAG sounds like ass-kicking cock rock to me.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:55 (seven years ago) Permalink

When I first heard I Kissed a Girl, it was on Carson Daly's show back when he was in the studio and he was hyping her as a next big thing (which proved to be true, I guess). I watched the video with a blank stare wondering if I was, at that moment, fully disconnected from people actually like in their popular music.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:55 (seven years ago) Permalink

disconnected from what people actually like

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:56 (seven years ago) Permalink

first mistake: judging a katy perry song by a live performance.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:57 (seven years ago) Permalink

We're talking about an artist who is just riding whatever awesome hooks Dr. Luke/Max Martin et al are giving her, and IKAG has some of the best you could ask for. I don't get the hate at all.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:58 (seven years ago) Permalink

Well, I went to youtube and found the video immediately following the show to see if she was indeed a real thing. That only made it worse.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:58 (seven years ago) Permalink

Yeah, but did you listen to it with headphones really loud, cuz that's important.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:03 (seven years ago) Permalink

I will agree that IKAG is a joyless song (I would describe it as malevolent), but so are a lot of great metal/rock songs, which is pretty much what IKAG is.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:05 (seven years ago) Permalink

Actually, after going to take a peep at lyrics, it was actually "Ur So Gay" that I heard first. I remember thinking "I can NOT deal with songs that namedrop Myspace." Shortly thereafter, "I Kissed a Girl" came out and I was convinced at that point that I wanted to have nothing to do with her.

Then "Hot n' Cold" was an improvement, so I softened a little. And then "Vegas" was legitimately good, which I found incredibly frustrating because I couldn't hate her anymore.

That said, nothing I've heard from the new album (and I actually listened to half of it the other night) has stopped her from going back downhill in my estimation.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:13 (seven years ago) Permalink

matt, if you think that KP has a huge drop off after "i kissed a girl" & "hot n cold" then you're probably going to find quite a bit of disagreement round here

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:20 (seven years ago) Permalink

but like, i think there's a clear diff b/w the material from her second album and her third album where you could see why someone would like the new stuff

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:24 (seven years ago) Permalink

California Gurls would be in that league if the vocal melody in the chorus wasn't a mess.

Don't mean to imply that those other songs suck. Thinking of You and Firework are her only singles that I don't think are good songs.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:29 (seven years ago) Permalink

Firework is absolutely abysmal.

not much of a difference between HNC and IKAG though, imo.

There's a new style on the new album, for sure.

I'm surprised how many Katy Perry singles I've ended up loving over the years.

I have a lot of time for Hot n Cold, Thinking Of You, Teenage Dream, Firework, The One That Got Away, Wide Awake, Roar, Dark Horse, Birthday and Chained To The Rhythm. Last Friday Night is probably in my top 10 singles of the decade at this point.

She could have a few more in that list if she'd made some better single choices. The title track from Witness should have been the follow up to Chained. The Prism campaign was just really badly handled in general. Legendary Lovers and Walking On Air should have taken the places of Unconditionally (apparently Katy really fought hard for that one) and This Is How We Do (apparently Katy fighting for Unconditionally and it flopping meant she didn't get to choose any of the other singles and this one was not her call).

kitchen person, Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:44 (two weeks ago) Permalink

xpost tbf it was only her second single! i think there was a bit of excitement/relief that it was a punchy, brassy uptempo pop-rock song that didn't have the forehead-slapping lyric of "I Kissed A Girl." then her next few singles were all more or less instantly forgotten.

boxedjoy, Monday, 5 February 2018 08:24 (one week ago) Permalink

I mean the thing about "Firework" is its like a safe, straight version of an LGBT anthem - nothing explicitly about queer struggles and oppression, just a horribly shrill rote performance of pride signifiers, and I absolutely do not need my hand held and my voice taken by the same popstar who once sang "you're so gay and you don't even like boys." Katy Perry has a huge amount of great singles as kitchen person lists, but she is the least interesting or likeable thing about any of them.
