this is worth it for "indulge" alone, but you also get the beautiful, pristine, perfect "self hypnosis", classic early derrick carter melodic dreaminess ("moods"), derrick may's moody "emanon" (bassline!!!), and the dark weeded out warehouse beats of "fall into a trance" (love how it flips that kraftwerk sample). mk track is maybe my least favourite but is still very good by most standards, it just somehow feels like the odd one out. i can't quite remember how the rhythmatic track goes so will listen when i get home

the sleeve notes on the back cover of this comp are beyond classic

this was one of my first cds.
still sounds ace.
i think from the listing here, there are a few extra tracks on the cd that were not on vinyl.

wash out. i guess i won't bother polling the second volume, though i think it's my favourite of the two. somehow despite not having anything quite as stunning as "indulge" or "self hypnosis" it seems like a stronger whole. it's generally darker in tone, gradually losing more of the house influences. in tracks like jay denham's "the calling", model 500 "infoworld", "heychild's theme", and "dissonance" by xon (incredible dark sci-fi electro from richard h kirk) you can begin to see the roots of stuff like the artificial intelligence series, art records, early peacefrog, black dog and those buzz comps like virtualsex and panic in detroit. obviously these advances had already been made a couple of years earlier in detroit, but the second volume of this comp does a really great job of bringing it all together into one place

Gotta go with "Indulge". (Full disclosure: I started a thread on this very song a few years back, and don't think I got even one response!) Neal Howard is very elusive; I think he only released maybe 4 tracks in his life, all of which are excellent, then disappeared. (The tracks in your poll are pretty fresh in my mind, since I listened to a couple discs of that Network box set just this afternoon. Oh, and the Rhythmatic track? It goes "whoo WHOO OO OOh, oo OOOH oo ooh".) Also to be sought out is Altern-8's "remix", entitled "Re-Indulge", which adds some ravey patois but otherwise simply extends the track by a minute or two.

i'll search out that aletrn-8 remix, thanks

it amazes me how relatively little known "indulge" is

i wonder what happened to neal howard? he only put one other record out, right? i kinda like the idea of him making "indulge" and just being like, damn, can't really top that

The only other track of his that I have ("The Gathering") is another piano classic, Vincent Guaraldi on acieed. I've seen a couple other tracks with his name on them, but I'm not sure if they are remixes or originals. That is pretty amazing though, to put out a perfect tune and then call it a day. How many rockers threaten to do just that and wind up being diminishing-return lifers?
