Ou sont les cankles d'antan? (Leee), Monday, 15 November 2010 00:25 (thirteen years ago) link

For posterity, I guess:

Never ever cared much for the EP7.1 portion of this one, EP7.2 is indescribably more palatable to me, even with the Incunabula meets Confield sound of... "Dropp"? Or is it "Liccflii"? Anyway, "Netlon Sentinel" for me, despite how "Pir" is basically another version of "Krib" (which I voted for in Cichlisuite).

Pir is incredible. I managed to finally bond a little with my work manager (also a Warp fan) over this track. I hear someone zealously flushing a toilet when there's no water left in the cistern. He reckons it's people slamming car doors underwater...

Anyway, this album is acers from start to finish. I really like the hip-hop cut-up stuff on "Ccec" (pronounced sea-sick apparently), it's always a nice surprise when Ae start wearing their hip-hop influence on their sleeve. Dropp and Left Blank are also amazing. I remember having a wee smoke back at LOL uni, then lying in the dark and listening to those tracks with headphones. It sounds kind of lame now, but as Noodle said on another thread, there's a very 3D-thing going on with a lot this stuff.

You can't fault the final four tracks on this though. Insanely good - a total rollercoaster with all the stops pulled out. Maphive 6.1 sounds like a medieval battle-field and then a sort of bar-room jazz duo come in and start tuning their instruments about. Might well get my vote. Zeiss Contarex starts off with the most demonic sounds ever committed to CD imo, and then goes into a slow-steppin track for enormous steel doorways. Netlon Sentinel is the sound of the earth just fucking collapsing in on itself. And then there's the awesomely beautiful Pir to make the world all good again.

Can't forget Outpt - melody vs noise vs melody vs noise.

EP my bum.

xtc ep, etc (xp) (ledge), Monday, 15 November 2010 09:26 (thirteen years ago) link

To me this "EP" is a more varied beast, sound-wise, than any of their other "long playing" releases, although I don't really know what makes me think that. It's just a feeling maaaan. Undoubtedly there is a game of two halves thing going on; the first part is all funky hip-hop beats, the second is where the monsters break free.

Squeller would be my first-half vote, makes me wanna get out of my chair and start bodypopping. But Netlon Sentinel has to take the prize, 'the earth just fucking collapsing in on itself', yeah that'll do.

"Pir" is basically another version of "Krib"

No way man! Krib is bouncy happy happy joy joy, skipping through the park on a sunny day. Pir is way sadder, all sitting alone in a dark basement filled with regret and resignation. While drumkits continuously fall down the stairs.

n.b. since the polls started i've just been listening to these on earbuds at work. this is the first time that i've realised that there is some wicked bass going on, and i really should be hearing it through my speakers at home. The cavernous echoes that come in at 4:14 in liccflii in particular.

Maybe. I was probably comparing the pretty, noodly melody that each track, and that I get as much (or more) melancholy from "Krib" as I do from "Pir."

To me this "EP" is a more varied beast,

It is an EP! Well, a compilation of two EPs.

Interesting sub-question: which jewel case is cooler, LP5 or EP7?

now I have already made it clear that I'm not your typical ae fan.
for instance I prefer EP7 to LP5

Rpeg and Ccec are great but I'm gonna have to listen to the rest of the album to remember which songs are which

Wow, I wasn't expecting Maphive to do so well (i voted for it), but it seemed the points were scattered fairly liberally over the album which is a good sign. Pir could've done with some more points.

six years pass...

did anyone ever explain the thinking behind ep7? it's 70 minutes long, has a dozen tracks on it and yet is called 'ep7' and not 'lp7'. it's also made to look, on the cover, like there are only 4 tracks. and was also sort of mid-price (mine was £6.99 from virgin in hemel in june '99)

> It is an EP! Well, a compilation of two EPs.

ah, ok, this kind of makes sense. i only ever had it on cd so didn't consider the 2 x 12" aspect. (vinyl art is different from the 8 or so example in the cd booklet, i notice). i guess 'come to daddy' was similar. ditto disjecta's 'looking for snags'.

three years pass...

i've always wondered if it would be possible to decipher the source of ccec, i only recently realised the second half of east flatbush project - tried by twelve (autechre mx) has some vocals that sound a hell of a lot like it. maybe they used the same filter (/whatever) on a different vocal... maybe not.

one month passes...

less a coherent statement than lp5, which is i guess one of the many reasons why it's called ep7. as it is though it still nearly works like a compilation of all my favorite autechre tracks, particularly "maphive," my all-time fave. it's jazz

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 14:44 (three years ago) link

I agree it's one of my faves, especially the last 4 tracks which are just such a suite of thrilling > terrifying > more terrifying > pretty. Maphive makes me think of jazz AND medieval battles

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 14:53 (three years ago) link

lol the opening of it makes me think of someone melting the final fantasy vii soundtrack

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 16:08 (three years ago) link

Finding the 2nd half of this "EP" on wax recently was a major thrill.

octobeard, Wednesday, 30 September 2020 20:59 (three years ago) link

I remember listening to Left Blank thinking "shit, here's the first Ae track to officially ditch all coherent melody... I really hope they don't dive head first in this direction"

Even with my present day deep appreciation and enjoyment of their early/mid 00's records (which took quite a bit of time for me) Left Blank still gives me a blank to this day.

octobeard, Wednesday, 30 September 2020 21:03 (three years ago) link

I always heard that one as being fairly accessible. It's those slow-rising sheets of white noise. I'm really into them

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 1 October 2020 00:30 (three years ago) link

Yeah that ones all about the atmosphere, wouldn't be out of place on Confield. Of all the EP7 tracks Ccec is the one that still baffles me somewhat.

neith moon (ledge), Thursday, 1 October 2020 08:01 (three years ago) link

I listened to it last night to remind myself of what it sounds like and found it surprisingly emotional and touching. It's great 'getting into the airlock and getting ready to be beamed into space' music. There are also subtle 'melodic' touches - just the single note every few bars which acts as a tonal anchor before morphing into the aforementioned sheet-noise

Am I crazy or does "Outpt" not sound a bit like the template for early dubstep
