Jan 2003. Intitled album. Damn...oh well I get to see them 11-17 at the Middle East.

mr and mrs clientele used to frequent this place, maybe they will help you out on their return.

new shows have been announced via the groups mailing list which you can join at http://www.missprint.org/lacewings. unfortunately i deleted the email that contained those dates so i can't quote them here.

i'm very sad, however, that they won't be playing in london between september 13th and 26th when i'll be there. seeing them would make the price of airfare a less bitter pill to swallow.

Um.. you've probably seen this by now, but this is all the news:

September 29th - Gig at Bush Hall in London

7" single out in November - "Haunted Melody"/"Breathing Soft & Low" (Merge/Pointy)

November 15 - Knitting Factory NYC

November 16 - Maxwells Hoboken

November 17 - Middle East Boston

(Possible Show in Europe)

January/February 2003 - Untitled Album

Sometime to follow album - 2 or 3 week tour of US

And

Compilation appearances (Chickfactor - "Rain" and on a Secretly Canadian side project label thing - "Grass won't pay no mind (live)")

The other thing is that the Lost Weekend EP second pressing got all messed up - so that somepeople are getting a CD that says Clientele on it, but which actually contains 10 tracks by Vitesse. !!

let me say that i hope the rest of the ep is better than this song

wow. you're not kidding. that white boy soul they are attempting is tired tired tired.

kwhitehead, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, upon reflection, the song is distressingly pedestrian.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Still one of my favorite bands. And, obv., it's okay to experiment with their sound, especially on an EP.

This is the best possible news ever. The Clientele is my favorite band!

Evan, Thursday, 15 June 2017 16:27 (six years ago) link

Completely unrelated- I was recently thinking about how it's kind of funny that you can probably assemble a pretty long album of Clientele songs that all consist of guitar stabs w/ psychedelic guitar solo jams.
I feel like those songs were indicative of a compositional rut they were experiencing late in their career. I mean, the intricate jazz chord reverb plucking style is not easy to write with. I can see the guitar stab + psychedelic solo thing being so much less of a pain to write, especially if the guitar-melody-well is a little drier otherwise.

Gorgeous song.

four years pass...

listening to the clientele after time with family during Thanksgiving break ... I hope all is well with the members of the band and their friends and family over the years.

From their Instagram there was a post in September with a photo of the inside of a studio and "Here we go again". So, that's promising?

Evan, Friday, 10 December 2021 19:34 (two years ago) link

Oh yeah, nobody engaged just upthread there with my geeky analysis of their guitar compositions and the theory that it corresponds to a (suspected) burning out before calling it quits. Well, I for one agree, Evan of 2017!

Evan, Friday, 10 December 2021 19:39 (two years ago) link

Hi Youn! Hope you’re doing alright too! xp

I’m not a big Clientele fan but I really enjoyed listening to Alasdair MacLean talking about the Beatles on a recentish episode of the Your Own Personal Beatles podcast

Alba, Saturday, 11 December 2021 10:56 (two years ago) link

That "important Beatles research" is starting to get out of hand!

Luna Schlosser, Saturday, 11 December 2021 13:12 (two years ago) link

xpost that episode with Alasdair on the Beatles podcast is very good. lots of content about early days of the Clientele and their writing process, not just aren't the Beatles great

that's not my post, Saturday, 11 December 2021 16:11 (two years ago) link

Yeah, it was fascinating that despite being in awe of the Beatles, he barely knows the White Album or Abbey Road, just because he couldn't hear anything to use from them. I'm glad they asked a follow-up question about this professional tendency/curse to only listen to music you can find a use for. I'd have liked them to have probed a bit more about what it was about the White Album that left him uninterested though – I think with Abbey Road it was the solid-state production.

Tell me about it. I love digging in all these rabbit holes though.

what's this about a new album?

As Evan said:
