"Mutant slow techno and Kevin Drumm records..." - A thread for Raime, Chasing Voices, Old Apparatus etc.

kinda wish there was a thread for all this weird gloomy vaguely industrial stuff coming out lately -- Raime, Demdike Stare, the latest Scorn album, recent Mordant Music and Shackleton stuff...

― missingNO, Thursday, December 23, 2010

Kinda feel like there could be a separate Techno Bobbins thread now... Further fueling the inevitable utopian techno takeover, Ex Nihilo Nihil Fit by Chasing Voices is all grainy digital synth choirs, hyper syncopated restless drum patterns, and endlessly modulated filter noises. The synths are so beautifully woozy, they wow and flutter like old VHS machines. You can almost visualize the reverb as if watching the trails from street lamps when driving through a rainy city at night. It's an update on that classic ART/Ifach/B12 sound but seems to be going in a new direction somehow. And crucially contains plenty of dance floor pressure. Extremely sick. Not sure who Chasing Voices are, their previous release was an analog half-stepper that skirted the similar realms that artists such as Raime and Demdike Stare have been exploring, interpreting contemporary dance music trends through the cracked lenses of industrial and dark wave.

― Volker Veldeke, Friday, November 26, 2010

I came here this afternoon looking for the very same thing and couldn't find one. So please let this be it.

The quote in the thread title is taken from the Boomkat review of Chasing Voices' Acidbathory "Imagine Croydon estates and South London sprawl replaced by looming residential blocks, imposing skyscrapers and alleyways where the sunlight never reaches, soundtracked by mutant slow techno and Kevin Drumm records rather than 2-step garage and D'n'B."

Does Ekoplekz fit here? Hadn't heard Chasing Voices before, that's good stuff.

For sure. All tangents and recommendations welcome.

sounds like a dope thread imo. maybe some of the more haunted housey Nicolas Jaar stuff might fit in here, no?

Thanks Whiney.

Some of my fave from this year, that prob fit here...

Ekoplekz – Memowrekz [Mordant Music]
Sun Araw & Mathewdavid – LIVEPHREAKXXX!!!! [Leaving Records]
Bee Mask – Canzoni Dal Laboratorio Del Silenzio Cosmico [Spectrum Spools]

lol sun araw fits just about any thread, don't he!

I prob wouldn't put one of his albums in here but this is some sort of live remix thing Mathewdavid did of Sun Araw stuff, its more beat led and electronic.

Really like this track from Ekoplekz on Punch Drunk

Think I need to buy the Raime / Regis split based on "This Foundry." This rules, thanks, Barnaby.

Not so into the Chasing Voices stuff for some reason but OA and Raine are sounding really good to me right now...

Does Regis count due to the Raime split release? If so, can I mention how annoyed I am I missed out on this Sandwell District limited release? (imo sandwell district has some moments like this, but they're more mainstream as a project)

Hey, no problem.

Does Regis count due to the Raime split release?

I've only heard the Raime track/remix on the split. Would love links to anything you consider to count.

There's also a connection between the Downwards label that has been putting out Regis' records and Blackest Ever Black, home of Raime. The next release on BEB being by Tropic Of Cancer, who previously released on Downwards:

Although the above track doesn't really fit this thread.

Some interesting tangents in BEB's best of 2010 list on Boomkat (which includes two of the records we've been talking about):

There are some mixtapes you can download through the blackesteverblack site iirc. Haven't checked any of those out yet though.

Woah, thanks for the heads up on Emptyset.

Some interesting background here... http://bassmusicblog.com/the-return-of-subtext-emptyset-and-vexd-sort

"Emptyset have their new album 'Demiurge' due in a couple of weeks and hopefully we'll get to chat to Ginz about some of the work that went into making it - I know that at one point, they took everything they had made up to that point to an unfinished stately home, played it all though a massive PA, recorded the results through vintage microphones and then mixed that live reverb back into the original tracks, which is slightly more interesting than the usual 'yeah Kev came round with some 808 samples and I put a bassline from Massive over the top'."

Subtext looks like a label to watch:

"Bristol's experimental modern classical label"

Barnaby, Hardly, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 09:46 (seven years ago) Permalink

Empty set are damn good, they did a mix for us a while back too: http://www.sonicrouter.com/2009/11/interview-emptyset-caravan/ more info on what they're about too.

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 10:19 (seven years ago) Permalink

new Emptyset reminds me more of Hecker or Pan Sonic than anything ppl can/would go out and dance to - I do like it but it's ~cold~

everything I've read abt the Andy Stott thing sounds like it's precision-tooled to blow me away, should really go buy it I guess

puppetry of the pulis (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 10:40 (seven years ago) Permalink

The Andy Stott thing is good, if bass heavy in a "you must have headphones or a home audio system that gets that deep bass" way. Then again, that's kind of an entry requirement for this thread.

Not too familiar with Emptyset yet, but I get to see them right before Mika Vainio next week. Yesssss.

straightola, Monday, 6 June 2011 14:22 (seven years ago) Permalink

Holy shit this new Emptyset album. Mencap otm, first thing I thought of was Pan Sonic. The first song (after the intro) sounds like doom metal, the way the kick distorts and delays and reverberates - could be a Southern Lord band! Well, sorta. Anyway, this rules.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 14:48 (seven years ago) Permalink

Those guys were really cool live, and friendly when I ran into them after their show.

I realized later that telling them that they played a "great set" when their name is Emptyset is kind of silly, but oh well.

mh, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 14:49 (seven years ago) Permalink

The name Emptyset seems a bit silly because Pan Sonic's alias ø means empty set, right?

forest zombie (Vasco da Gama), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:51 (seven years ago) Permalink

Yup! I think it's an homage.

Kind of funny that they played right before Mika Vainio at Mutek

aaand I just said that a few posts back. Whoops.

mh, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:15 (seven years ago) Permalink

This is kinda mutant...

Ghosting Seasons are a sort of post-rock/techno project, kinda noisy but with a bright techy sort of pulse. We've got a Spatial remix to give away too which is pretty damn good.

Fits here better than the other dance-ish threads anyway.

I first heard of Ekoplekz stuff through that woebot blog, and then from a friend who was interested in synth experimentation, and finally actually heard stuff on a Mordant Music compilation. I think he codes a lot more as experimental/weird than as dub techno.

"deepchord clone" being an intriguing state since they're really kind of a flattened down version of a handful of basic channel tracks
