Twelve years of hits and misses. What are you going with?

(I'm skipping singles where she was a featured artist on someone else's release and focusing on material where she was the primary.)

I've developed a serious love of "Fighter" over time that I certainly did not have when it was new. Her performance on that song is a force of nature.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

good poll idea, surprised it hadn't been done. you know, i think i'm going with "can't hold us down" but it's pretty close.

i still maintain that the stripped singles campaign, including videos, is one of the greatest pop runs of the whole 00s. one of the last times i felt like one of the biggest pop stars in the world was constantly making pop that was unexpected and boundary-pushing - like, even lady gaga's brief imperial phase last year doesn't compare.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't really get Stripped upon its release. I fell into the trap of "ew, why's she being so trashy?" like a lot of other people did and let it paint my view of the whole era. Now it's pretty clear that 2002/03 was the time she could do no wrong.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

"Come on Over Baby (All I Want Is You)", I think.

PΓ☼LΞG☼ (prolego), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

I thought she was heading to be the ~next Madonna~ during Stripped. Then it all kind of slowly unravelled over the years, and I'm not sure why. Looking at this list of singles now it's better than I had previously thought, but it seems like wasted talent & potential has been the story of most of her career.

PΓ☼LΞG☼ (prolego), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

It's still "Genie in a Bottle" and "What a Girl Wants" for this boy. And she's been worthless since 2007.

I fell into the trap of "ew, why's she being so trashy?" like a lot of other people did and let it paint my view of the whole era

i think most people thought that on "dirrty"s release, but i loved how she immediately switched everything up completely with the very next release, both in terms of image and sound. i don't think anyone had any idea she had a "beautiful" in her - the first great ballad is always a milestone for any pop star, i think - and the complete reversal from the (incredibly fun) sexually available skankiness of the "dirrty" video to a video that felt important because it showed two dudes kissing - with tongues! - made for a fantastic pow! pow! one-two punch. (and then a further two pow!s for "fighter" and "can't hold us down".)

idk whether it all slowly unravelled as just stopped completely - back to basics wasn't great but it was still decent, had one classic 4eva single and another that's had surprising legs as an xfactor standard. and then after that she just stopped releasing stuff until last year, and we all know how that went. but one dodgy mess of an album isn't really a total unravelling.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

Alfred, do you like "Genie 2.0"? It wasn't a single, but it was one of the re-arranged/re-recorded tracks on the greatest hits. Aweome imo.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

top 5: Beautiful, What A Girl Wants, Fighter, Come On Over Baby, Genie In A Bottle

imo she's been worthless since 2003

barbaric ya'll (some dude), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

i hate to vote for her breakthrough hit, but it really is the best

honorable mentions: the other debut album singles (even the space jam cover), beautiful, can't hold us down, you lost me

her worst song by far is reflection

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

resisted the urge to vote "Candyman" and went with "Beautiful"

bell hops (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

I still don't get "Come On Over Baby"

my top 5:

Dirrty
Genie In A Bottle
Beautiful
Ain't No Other Man
Fighter/What a Girl Wants (depends on mood)

guilty pleasure: Candyman

I just like… I just have to say… (Starts crying) (DJP), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

i remember when "come on over baby" first came out i was basically like "wtf is this shit" but then it clicked for me when the video was on tv and my brother imitated the way she says "SEXUALITY" in the 2nd verse

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

The break down in 'come on over baby' sound so rubbish now. I know it's going for an owner of a lonely heart/black or white kind of vibe but it falls laughably short. Kind of ruins a great track for me now I think about it.

owenf, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

"Dirrty" or "What a Girl Wants"

scissorlocks and the three bears (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

I endured a period in early 2007 when I went around the office singing "Ain't No Other Man." Did my coworkers hate me!

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

"Ain't No Other Man" is pretty worthless too imo

barbaric ya'll (some dude), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

She had a single before genie in a bottle.. interesting..

billstevejim, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

It was a song from the Mulan soundtrack.

I think this is the one where she belts a high G?

I just like… I just have to say… (Starts crying) (DJP), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

okay listening to this I think it must have been an E, not a G (which, for a belt, is still impressive)

"Can't Hold us Down" for me

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

i will be thinking of the great heights her career and vocal range soared into while i watch her sit in a chair and clap on her new reality show tonight

barbaric ya'll (some dude), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

The Voice = American Idol with the chairs facing the other way

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

It seems to borrow some things from X-Factor from what I can tell, though I'm still not 100% familiar with how X-Factor works. I know the judges take a more hands-on approach.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

She's never topped Genie in a Bottle.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

To me she did, with "Dirrty" and "Aint No Other Man".

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, original Genie isn't a song I really like all that much (do like Genie 2.0 though).

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

barring her joints w/ storch & "genie in a bottle" she's outright one of the worst singles artists of my lifetime

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 April 2011 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

i do believe my stance on "ain't no other man" is well defined

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 April 2011 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

"A Stroke of Genius" (ducks)

OK OK "Candyman" is a guilty pleasure. Didn't Dom Passantino once call it the worst song of all time?

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

Hurt
Slow Down Baby
Oh Mother
Keeps Gettin' Better
Dynamite
Not Myself Tonight
I Hate Boys
Woohoo (ft Nicki Minaj)
You Lost Me

^^^ never heard of any of these. were they hits?

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

Keeps Gettin' Better was a bait track (& single & title track & video) on her Target-Exclusive Hits comp.

oh c'mon dude, Storch only did 2 of her singles, and "Fighter" and "Can't Hold Us Down" are decidedly minor hits (although I love "Fighter"). at the very least Christina has more good singles than Britney imo.

barbaric ya'll (some dude), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

I was never crazy about Christina or the way she uses her voice but I remember loving Lady Marmalade and Come on Over back when they were released.

Maybe I'm either overestimating "Ain't No Other Man" or underestimating the rest of her stuff, but that's the only time my tastes ever intersected with what she was doing.

"Beautiful" is easily one of the most overrated singles of the previous decade, though. Sorry.

jer.fairall, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

keeps gettin better sounds like mid-00 goldfrapp or girls aloud and i might be the only 1 who loves it

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

A lot of my aversion to xtina is outright hatred of her voice. Brit's songs at least live or die on the quality of the songwriting.

i would like "ain't no other man" more if it were a little less shouting-heavy in its second half

"You Lost Me" >>> "Beautiful"

maybe i'm just gay (Tape Store), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

just replace "ain't no other man" with "her whole career" in teledyldonix's post

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 April 2011 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

'can't hold us down' is probably the best, although "making up a few false rumours or two" is a bit ugh

uberweiss, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

the only one I would play willingly now is Dirrty, so that

gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

Dirrty is responsible for girls of my generation (and much to old really) to be doing really questionable dancing. I can't even listen to it without thinking of thigh sweat.

owenf, Thursday, 28 April 2011 11:22 (fifteen years ago)

"Dirrty" and "Come On Over Baby" are the only two great singles on this list - voted the former accidentally as I like the latter a bit more.

"Beautiful" is good. There's a GREAT poppers o'clock mix of "Hurt" I enjoyed but the original is limp.

"Ain't No Other Man" is one of pop's very nadirs.

I don't wanna be with nobody but boobs. Oh no. (edwardo), Friday, 29 April 2011 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

Much as "Dirrty" is the go-to dancefloor monster, I would like to point out that "Can't Hold Us Down" is infinitely more fun to dance and grind to.

ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Friday, 29 April 2011 07:26 (fifteen years ago)

"Come On Over"'s album version holds up better, I think.

I voted the one I always compulsively sing whenever I hear, which, um, well.
