Ben Orr singing the Cars' best early singles

vs

Doug Yule filling in for Lou Reed cuz Lou's voice was shot

Now that I'm aware both groups rocked two singers I can tell the difference, but in high school I just assumed Lou could sing far prettier in 1969 when he wanted to than he could later on. And never would have guessed "My Best Friend's Girl" and "Just What I Needed" had different singers.

da croupier, Thursday, 12 May 2011 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

Ric Ocasek looks kinda like a cross between Cale and Reed tho

it's time for the fish in the perculator (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 12 May 2011 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

I think part of my adolescent obliviousness re: Yule/Orr was probably helped by the words "Yule" and "Orr" rarely appearing in articles about the Velvets reunion or Ric exploiting his Weezer success.

hell, even cale went trad -- vintage violence and paris 1919 are total pop albums. only one who really took the VU's experimentalism to heart might've been nico, of all people.

tylerw, Friday, 13 May 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

in terms of Art, you really can't fuck w/ Cale-era VU - but I've always found myself reaching for s/t or 1969 Live most often. Yule is just fine in my book. Even if I don't view him as an especially valuable voice in the band, he was serviceable as a foil for Lou (which was a role that suited them just fine at the time). It was when he started trying to leverage more say in the band that things became problematic.

whether Doug Yule ruined the VU or not (prolley not, i didn't nec mean to say that, tho 'too soon decline' does imply a certain causality), the question remains whether he can go toe-to-toe with the man who sang on "Just What I Needed" & "Bye Bye Love"

Ha, that's the Velvet Underground.

Squeeze may not have sold a lot of records back in the day, but everyone who heard it later sold insurance or handled HR for moderately successful car dealerships.

Ha. In other VU news, there is currently an exhibit running in NYC of the art of their original drummer, Angus MacLise. Looks pretty interesting.

Don't know why I just thought this, but I remember really liking the way the lyrics were printed on the dust sleeve of that first Cars album.

preemptively appalled that yule will beat ben orr but the velvets are so sacrosanct that people would vote moe tucker over john bonham on this board

Was originally going to give a knee-jerk vote to Orr on the grounds that no one beats the guy who sang "Just What I Needed". Yule was talented, though, and I should spin some of those later Velvets recordings before deciding.
