1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die - 1971

Torn between Bowie and The Beach Boys, both with really great tracks. Voting "Life On Mars", but would have gone Beach Boys had the "Surf's Up" album been represented by "Till I Die" instead of the (awesome, after all) title track.

My favorite Bowie track pre-1975 vs. the drums of doom. Drums conquer all, so the vote goes to When The Levee Breaks.

Also great tracks from Lennon, Crosby and Cohen. And Rod Stewart's best ever moment besides a couple of his underrated early 80s new wave-ish singles. "Vincent" is actually better than "American Pie" IMO, while "Inner City Blues" is the only one of the four singles off "What's Going On" that I do notlike. And... "Stairway To Heaven" is great, "When The Levee Breaks" is not...

Down to five for me: "Maggie May," "Surf's Up," "It's Too Late," "Tired of Being Alone," or "Superstar." I'll vote for "It's Too Late," a song I've slighted elsewhere. Egregious omissions: the Undisputed Truth's "Smiling Faces Sometimes," the Stylistcs "Betcha By Golly, Wow," Sly's "Family Affair," the Rolling Stones' "Sway" (or at least something from Sticky Fingers), the Move's "Do Ya," Nilsson's "Without You." Picks I would prefer: "Let's Stay Together," "Kooks," "Carey." Five oddball favourites: Carly Simon's "Anticipation," Grin's "Lost a Number," the Guess Who's "Rain Dance," Jefferson Airplane's "Thunk," Spring's "Sweet Mountain." No way in heaven and earth is "Vincent" half the song "American Pie" is.

Just listened to the clip of "City of New Orleans." Goodman wrote it, but sounds to me like Arlo nailed it in his cover.

"Surf's Up" belongs more to 1966-67 imo.

Surprised by the lack of love for "Imagine" so far - too corny?

I thought this list was better than last year's. I think "Famous Blue Raincoat" is my favorite Cohen song so I went with that. But, I dunno.

My reactions to most of the songs on this list fall into one of three categories: LOVE them, sick of them, or never heard them.

The Who: Won't Get Fooled Again 3

Surprised. Thought it'd be in the running to win.

Me too (I'm one of the 3). I think its reputation has suffered due to NCIS and car commercials. But like Townshend said, "Your perception of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' is so shallow that it's violated by dancing raisins?!"

I'm not surprised by "Won't Get Fooled Again" polling low--for me, anyway, everything Tommy and beyond has to contend with this none-too-attractive mental image I carry around in my head of a bare-chested Roger Daltrey bellowing out that scream that I tired of years ago. There are other, less overplayed songs on Who's Next that I think survive much better.

The thing that surprises me is how high the Carpenters are. Great song, almost voted for it myself, but 25 years ago I had to be almost apologetic when I let on how much I loved the early Carpenters singles. Things have changed so much.

Not necessarily for the better. I'm all for reevaluating unjustly maligned pop from back whenever. ABBA I'm willing to suspend judgement on. I'll grant that Karen Carpenter had an impressive voice and that the duo had some fetching melodies. But for the most part - ick.

There are other genres than funk and R&B too, you know, although I guess those might well have been in the book instead of other funk/R&B picks.
