i'm not saying it's a bad "greatest hits" collection. in fact, i'd go out on a limb and say the reason it's so damn ubiquitous is because it's a genuinely great 60 minutes of music and stuff. but, maybe you live in, or near, a fraternity. maybe you're backpacking in southeast asia. perhaps, like me, you used to work at a retail store that played this album three times a day the entire day, every day i worked there, for like 2 years. maybe you're fed up? maybe you're just over the age of, say, 25, and have heard it enough now, thanks. i suspect many people out there have felt this way before.
so, in the interest of peace and sanity of all my fellow legend-haters, i'd like to create a nice compilation of awesome reggae music that is not actually on bob marley - legend. i will carry several copies of it with me wherever i go, and whenever the repeat button in abused in conjunction with bob marley's compilation cd, i will present the infractor with this other, alternative collection of reggae hits, and ask they play it in legend's stead. for this to work, it must all be music so excellent that no one who actually still likes legend will complain and ask them to change the music back to legend again. in fact, this would probably work best if the first song was still bob marley, in case someone says "hey turn bob marley back on again!" this is what i've got so far:
bob marley - survivalsweat - inner circlei can see clearly now - johnny nashsmoke two joints - the toyes
red red wine - tony tribe al brown - here i am babythe tide is high - the paragonsand a bunch of other stuff off of the trojans originals boxed set
israelites - desmond dekkeryou can get it if you really want - jimmy cliffand more or less the the rest of the harder they come soundtrack while we're at it
plus turn your lights down low - bob marley, sun is shining - bob marley etc etc
what am i missing? what's that "one love" phrase that someone (dr. dre?) sampled for that rap song for instance?

surely you've ever been forced to listen to bob marley's greatest hits collection one too manny goddamn times mr. latin? it literally happened to me yesterday, my friends all groaned when some probably-well-meaning-but-musically-unsophisticated bar staff member started the cd up a second time, and everyone agreed making a compilation called "please don't play legend again" was an excellent idea - the kid probably just wanted to hear some more reggae but didn't know what else to play, and all the tourists love bob marley, so...
"Messiahwannabe, have u listened to dub side of the moon, yet? I've converted many former reggae-haters into reggae fans through it."
oh hell yeah, love it, that was one of the suggestions i immediately decided was going on the comp - i think i'll use one of those songs to lead into the "random but excellent covers of non-reggae tunes" section of the mix.

I've never even heard Black Uhuru before, at least not that I know of.
Really?! They were a pretty well-regarded outfit in their heyday, and while they definitely went the pop-reggae route mid-career, it's good hook-laden songwriting imo. #1 single in the UK:
