We've been chattering about it in forks' original Listening Room, but since the name of that thread is somewhat deceptive (being that no one goes there anymore) and since the turntable.fm thread is about turntable.fm (which is currently US-only and...er, stupid), here's a dedicated thread for the outloud.fm room.
It's been going strong for a few weeks now. As far as rules go, the only thing we've decided on is that if you're going to play a LONG track it's only polite to ask other people in the room if that's okay and, if they give you the go-ahead, don't upload another really long one right behind it. The room works best with average-length songs so it's more like a carousel, with people's uploads staggered in fair order and different styles being encouraged and enjoyed. (Occasionally a theme will develop...we've had disco mornings, funk nights, grunge afternoons, etc.)
It looks like this:
http://i.imgur.com/4fHcs.jpg
To add songs to the queue, simply drag and drop them from a folder on your computer to the queue column on the page. On the righthand side, it keeps track of people who are currently in the room. In the center, it keeps you abreast of what's currently playing when a song begins as you chat chat chat away the hours.
Currently, login requires either a facebook or twitter account, but several people have set up dummy twitter accounts to participate. Not a big deal, really.
So, that's outloud.fm/ILXORS. If it's empty when you drop in, bump this thread and someone will probably join you. :)

looks fun –– but to login i need to share all my facebook data?
― remy bean, Friday, 1 July 2011 02:50 (twelve years ago) link
If it creeps you out, set up a dummy twitter account. The guys that run outloud aren't some nefarious ne'er do wells, though. I doubt your security is really at risk.

You can also drag and drop straight from iTunes, rather than from a folder.

I don't like the name so much compared to the previous 2 iterations of this concept but the interface is def the slickest so far. Actually really reminds me of early 00's chatrooms... nostalgia or something.

― EZ Snappin, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link
I could really see this concept evolve into something brilliant, with some more features, for instance the ability to book 30 or 60 minute slots for 'radio show' like stuff, include mic support for dj'ing (or stand up comedy), etc. Some kind of modding/banning/voting system would be required then tho, maybe like "more than 75% of the listeners hate yr set -> kick". Or something.
― Siegbran, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:14 (twelve years ago) link
Checked in earlier - heard some amazing stuff. Thanks!

― jumpskins, Friday, 1 July 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link
with tight community moderation, a rating system, and the ability to stream without having to be in the chat room, i could see this being an internet radio alternative. are there room operators with mod privileges to ban trolls who queue up inappropriate stuff, or people who consistently play glitchy mp3s? I have zero interest in chatting on the internet, but wouldn't mind bookmarking a few consistently good rooms to listen to as background music or whatever.

nm, i'll google it
anyway, my favorite thing about outloud was that you could load from your own files, you didn't have to search on this or that site. this loses that, but the ability to share videos is nice.
― contenderizer, Sunday, 1 July 2012 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

― Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Sunday, 1 July 2012 23:11 (eleven years ago) link
alright, here's the word from Michael:
hey dude. i know, i'm sorrywe're bummed too, but the reality of it is that we recently started getting letters and phone calls from BMI, SESAC, and ASCAP (the music licensing agencies) asking for money to secure licensing, since continuing to operate the site requires broadcast licenses from each agency. way more money than we are capable of coughing up right now, sadly. so at the risk of also getting legal threats for not paying up, we had to take it down for now until we figure something out. i'd like to bring the site back in some fashion, maybe something password resicted or invite only, but i'm not clear on if that would protect us legally either - we'll have to see.
