probably voting sparks fly

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2011 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

i think i might also vote "sparks fly" even though it wasn't until the run-up to seeing her live this year that i considered it in this album's upper tier

"back to december" and "never grow up" are contenders, and you gotta give "dear john" its props too

most overrated = "the story of us"

lex pretend, Friday, 8 July 2011 17:24 (twelve years ago) link

1 back to december
2 dear john
3 sparks fly
4 enchanted
5 mine

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 July 2011 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

Most overrated: "Back to December."

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 8 July 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

Picked "Mean" over "Never Grow Up" and "Sparks Fly."

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 8 July 2011 17:38 (twelve years ago) link

Mean and Selena Gomez's Who Says are pretty much the same thing, 'cept one is Country.

Breezy Summer Jam (MintIce), Friday, 8 July 2011 18:04 (twelve years ago) link

not a fan of "mean" -- the chorus is like nails on a chalkboard 2 me for some reason

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2011 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

I picked "Mean"!

Virginia Plain, Friday, 8 July 2011 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

thanks for voting!!

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2011 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

the only songs I've kept in rotation off of this are mean and never grow up. and i actually just broke out fearless today for the first time since speak now came out and i'm still convinced of its superiority. i'll listen to the album again before i actually vote, but tentatively, i'd give it to mean.

kkvgz, Friday, 8 July 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

voted "Speak Now"

Euler, Friday, 8 July 2011 19:53 (twelve years ago) link

"mean"

the pallid white, noseless face of god (The Brainwasher), Friday, 8 July 2011 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

maybe dear john? i listened to mean 100 times a day for a spell there, though.

horseshoe, Friday, 8 July 2011 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

i still don't like "mean" either really

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 July 2011 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

she (or the speaker or whoever) comes of like an asshole in "speak now" but as a song it's kind of undeniable. (see also: "you belong with me")

horseshoe, Friday, 8 July 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

"Never Grow Up."

xhuxk, Friday, 8 July 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

I am 7/14ths of the way theough this and it's leagues better than I remember it. still not as perfect as Fearless imo, but I'm wondering why I was so on the fence about it last fall. Maybe the answer is somewhere in the second half.

kkvgz, Friday, 8 July 2011 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

better than revenge. that's where i tuned out last time. i remember now. Taylor Swift, you sound like a schoolmarm - cut it out!

kkvgz, Friday, 8 July 2011 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

i like better than revenge a lot

im somewhat w/ you that if you put this vs fearless id have a tough time picking

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2011 21:41 (twelve years ago) link

Love the album but Fearless is on another level. Think that with this album, I mostly dug the craft, except for a few tracks that hit me emotionally like 'Never Grow Up', but with Fearless I cared about every word and observation and exclamation.

abcfsk, Friday, 8 July 2011 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

My brain is aware that there's no way that 'Ours' is the best track on this but it's just so compulsively listenable.

not voting because c'mon

markers, Friday, 8 July 2011 22:22 (twelve years ago) link

alright i'll vote for long live but it could be for a lot of these and i don't want to think i'd rather just speak now

markers, Friday, 8 July 2011 22:22 (twelve years ago) link

01. sparks fly
02. mean
03. enchanted

prolego, Friday, 8 July 2011 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

For a long time it was "Dear John" for me but possibly "Enchanted" now.

Tim F, Saturday, 9 July 2011 00:03 (twelve years ago) link

good choice imo

markers, Saturday, 9 July 2011 00:03 (twelve years ago) link

1. Enchanted.

No other choice. But I suppose after that it'd be:

2. Sparks Fly
3. Better than Revenge
4. Mean
5. Last Kiss (completely completely will fuck you up if you let it)

preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 July 2011 00:54 (twelve years ago) link

damn I thought "Dear John" would carry this easily.

BTW "Enchanted" is dire

Very hard to choose. Was stuck between Never Grow Up, Haunted, and Long Live.

Decided on Haunted.

BTW "Enchanted" is dire

what i can't even

you take your "dear john" and go home

preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 July 2011 03:41 (twelve years ago) link

i mean i love "dear john" but it is kind of exhausting

preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 July 2011 03:42 (twelve years ago) link

the verses and bridge to "enchanted" are so so so good. the chorus brings it down a bit, but it's still probably my favourite.

2. sparks fly
3. mine
4. never grow up
5. back to december/last kiss

they're all completely great tbh, but s/t = fearless (basically best album ever contenders imo) > speak now

uberweiss, Saturday, 9 July 2011 12:59 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah what pushes "Enchanted" over the edge for me are:

1. "and you will say... Hey..."

2. The multi-tracked "please don't be in love with someone else / please don't have somebody waiting on you" section near the end.

Tim F, Saturday, 9 July 2011 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

I think what taylor does best is transform personal experience into universals and 'enchanted' does the best job of that on this album. so, enchanted.

dayo, Saturday, 9 July 2011 14:53 (twelve years ago) link

1. mean
2. sparks fly
3. mine
4. enchanted
5. better than revenge

last kiss is a painful cut and i don't have anything bad to say about story of us really.

my Sonicare toothbrush (difficult listening hour), Saturday, 9 July 2011 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

like at all because it's great.

my Sonicare toothbrush (difficult listening hour), Saturday, 9 July 2011 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

The multi-tracked "please don't be in love with someone else / please don't have somebody waiting on you" section near the end.

This. Absolutely makes the song.

1. Sparks Fly.
2. Back to December (The, "When your birthday passed, and I didn't call," line stopped me cold the first time I heard it and still does).
3. Enchanted.

jon_oh, Saturday, 9 July 2011 15:27 (twelve years ago) link

I heard "Sparks Fly" on country radio yesterday; apparently it's the new single now that "Mean" is winding down ("Mean" hit #2 on the country charts).

Euler, Saturday, 9 July 2011 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

TOO HARD

My brain is aware that there's no way that 'Ours' is the best track on this but it's just so compulsively listenable.

This is the "Stay Beautiful" effect. Though really the bonus tracks shouldn't be on here, even though I don't see any of them picking up votes. It's obvious why they didn't make the album; in comparison to shit like "Dear John" and "Haunted," they are so slight and Taylor-by-numbers (which obv still means they are pretty good).

I love Fearless much as anybody but for me it kinda falls off just a little bit after track 6 or 7. Speak Now doesn't hit as high, but it's more varied and interesting, and for someone who gets criticized for her voice she adds all sorts of shade to her vocalization that really augments the songs, or moments in songs that add up (that sort of defeated growl-sigh on "I swear I'd love you rrrrright" on "Back To December" or how she jumps at "I'm even better than you"--indicating a pleasant surprise, whether it's his at her proficiency or it's hers at being touched--and then lowers into something really sultry and flirty on "imagined I would be" in "Sparks Fly").

Maybe "Sparks Fly" then, which isn't the best song but has grown in estimation the more I listen to it. But then there's "Back To December" and "Dear John" and "Mean" and "Enchanted" and "Long Live." TOO HARD.

c'mon (billy), Saturday, 9 July 2011 16:17 (twelve years ago) link

"If This Was A Movie" is the best bonus track

I JUST WANT IT BACK THE WAY IT WAS BEFORE
AND I JUST WANT TO SEE YOU BACK AT MY. FRONT. DOOR.

uberweiss, Saturday, 9 July 2011 17:30 (twelve years ago) link

pleasantly shocked at all the "enchanted" love! i thought I was the only one sticking up for that song last fall

kaygee, Saturday, 9 July 2011 18:06 (twelve years ago) link

1. Speak Now

Catchy as Juliana Hatfield, verbose as Joe Strummer.

2. Sparks Fly
3. Better Than Revenge
4. Innocent
5. (everything else)

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

I hear "Speak Now" as Merseybeat of the best kind, & yeah it's my vote too.

I think I'm finally coming around on "The Story Of Us". Hearing it all the time on the radio is helping.

Euler, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 19:34 (twelve years ago) link

i think of myself as really liking this album but i only ever listen to half of it, pretty much always turn off somewhere around better than revenge/innocent/haunted -- maybe if the three unlikeable tracks weren't all clumped together I'd have some kind of idea how the album ends.

those first eight songs are all the best though.

c sharp major, Thursday, 14 July 2011 09:43 (twelve years ago) link

also, i am never going to stop being convinced that the chorus of 'if this was a movie' starts "come back, come back, come back to me, Eli"

When "Speak Now" first came out, I shared a clip of her performing the song on Letterman with my friends on FB and referred to it as Merseybeat!

haha lex I just mean that it swings in a pretty classic way...Merseybeat came in part from classic country...listen to your Dwight Yoakum & you'll know the score.
