I really dislike "Summer In the City" intensely so this is no contest for me

I sort of think Summer in the City rules pretty hard but In the Summertime is sort of lighter and airy and not as intense and therefore inherently more summery. It's a tough one for me.

Summer in the City is an amazing song.

The other one, whatever.

"Summer In The City" has that spooky-ass electric piano. Plus, it rocks harder than any other Spoonful song. Goin' with the Spoonful on this, by a mile.

"In the Summertime" just feels like some overly-cutesy "Sweet Georgia Brown" knockoff to me. "Summer in the City" otoh is a stone cold classic.

Surprised I missed this. "In the Summertime," not even close. I got sick of "Summer in the City" 25 years ago (loved it as a teenager, continue to love a few other Spoonful songs). "In the Summertime" may sound even better today than when I loved it in 1970, as a kid. There was some discussion of the "Have a drink, have a drive, go out and see what you can find" line on a Mungo Jerry thread a little while back.

Love 'em both, especially the way they both break down to false ending w/noisy engine sound fx halfway through. The Spoonful track is unusual in that it appears to be the rare ANTI-summer day song, with that pessimistic descending piano line. But at least it offers hope, since at night it's a diffeent world...And then that wistfulness that the days can't be like the nights. Great song! I guess I really have to vote for that one. I do love "In The Summertime" too, though (had the single when I was six.)

I'll call "Hot Fun," "Summer," and "In the Summertime" a draw, "Summer Madness" second, and, the one song that's mostly dead for me, "Summer in the City" a distant fifth ("Do You Believe in Magic," though, now that's a fantastic summer song).
