somehow over the past few years Love carved a special little place in my heart. really happy to see him back

austinb, Wednesday, 17 January 2018 18:29 (six years ago) link

haven't spent much time with "love", seemed a bit too normal for my taste after the exquisite weirdness and witchiness of "DIA" and "through donkey jaw"

will listen again

one month passes...

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Iv’e listened to the new album three times today (and counting). It’s terrific, does not disappoint, totally lives up to the anticipation I’d built up ever since the last album. My favorite album of 2018 so far.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 30 March 2018 23:32 (six years ago) link

Also, a pox on Pitchfork for somehow working in a David Gray reference in their otherwise glowing review.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 30 March 2018 23:34 (six years ago) link

this album is incredible. so much more vocally interesting than the things it's gotten slotted in with (Kurt Vile, etc), and so unafraid to just aim for those Big moments

Wasn’t sold on the past album but this one is easily my AOTY so far.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 31 March 2018 23:54 (six years ago) link

this album is awesome, it's so percussive

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 4 April 2018 00:27 (six years ago) link

sounds like chemical brothers 'the test', maybe not as good as the test but there's a lot more there to live with

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 00:42 (six years ago) link

by that i mean he obv sounds hella like richard ashcroft lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 00:49 (six years ago) link

Ashcroft doesn't bleat as much.

k3vin k., Wednesday, 4 April 2018 03:01 (six years ago) link

really into "miki dora"

k3vin k., Wednesday, 4 April 2018 03:31 (six years ago) link

blue rose, calling paul the suffering, and believe are my shit

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 4 April 2018 03:45 (six years ago) link

Mmm blue rose reminds me of bitter sweet symphony a little but this album doesn’t sound like richard ashcroft at all... makes me think more of Kevin Morby or Spiritualized if anything but those comparisons don’t really work either... it’s enough of a mixed bag to be its own thing and it’s very percussive and loop based which works in its favor.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 05:33 (six years ago) link

I think I need someone to explain this to me, because it’s sounding like Passenger with production from Pierre Marchand.

Tim F, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 09:06 (six years ago) link

I got precisely one track into this before realising that baggy David Gray a spacesuit wasn't really what I wanted to spend my Sunday listening to.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 10:03 (six years ago) link

I'll go back to it I'm sure but even the positive comments here aren't really inspiring me to do so.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 10:05 (six years ago) link

I tried this after reading a p4k review, and was expecting it to sound more like Spiritualised than an American David Gray. bad p4k, again + bad me for giving them clicks.

I like this!

had (crüt), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 22:22 (six years ago) link

"miki dora" really moves me, both as a piece of music but also as a succinctly brutal portrait of dora. I recognize so much of myself in it, for better or worse

love these lines:

Give nothing, take
Slid along the wave
Could not suffer existence
It wasn't meant to be

i like this a lot, even though i constantly have to remind myself that i'm not actually listening to kurt vile when i listen

stormzy daniels (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 23:43 (six years ago) link

First real listen and liking it - like the restraint. The absent crescendos are immanent somehow.
I do get the Ashcroft references. It's a timbral thing maybe.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Thursday, 5 April 2018 18:24 (six years ago) link

getting p strong Tusk vibes from this, last 30 seconds of 'miki dora' (roll around with meeee) it's unmistakably lindsay buckingham

flopson, Friday, 6 April 2018 01:54 (six years ago) link

nah, not weird enouogh

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 April 2018 01:55 (six years ago) link

the less janky ones obv, like 'think about me' or 'that's all for everyone' or 'i know i'm not wrong'

flopson, Friday, 6 April 2018 02:01 (six years ago) link

also hear some Paul Simon

flopson, Friday, 6 April 2018 02:02 (six years ago) link

that's the kinda stuff i hear too so it's funny that people keep bringing up like the war on drugs which is pretty absent to me aside from "believe"

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 April 2018 15:47 (six years ago) link

i dont hear kurt vile either, the guy's voice is way to distinctively aschroftian

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 6 April 2018 23:23 (six years ago) link

i think war on drugs comparison makes sense as far gentle repetitive indie with non-'cool' eighties rock influences; i've only ever listened to like 45 seconds of one war on drugs song tho

flopson, Saturday, 7 April 2018 00:31 (six years ago) link

it's pretty hard to un-hear ashcroft now that it's been mentioned but I can hear some paul simon in his voice -- vampire weekend was actually one of the first things I thought of

k3vin k., Saturday, 7 April 2018 00:37 (six years ago) link

this album is really good but I'm pretty surprised "miki dora" isn't more of a consensus pick, tho this is probably a good sign

k3vin k., Saturday, 7 April 2018 00:38 (six years ago) link

idk man everyting i see seems to cite miki dora as thee highlight

I did not expect this album to begin with the audio of the kid doing Herb Brook's speech from Miracle!

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 7 April 2018 01:26 (six years ago) link

Believe clicked hard yesterday, the buildup of the song is fantastic. There’s many highlights on the record and again I love how “percussive” it sounds... it’s not just the actual drums and percussions used, it’s the way the guitars and bass are played.

I feel like most of the songs were composed by looping a section and adding arrangements until it sounded right. Believe seems like it was made from 2 or even 3 different song ideas and it feels more like a “full song” than anything else. As if the rest of the songs were experiments leading up to this one. I’d place a hard bet on it being one of the last songs he did on this one.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 7 April 2018 14:13 (six years ago) link

saw them live this weekend, never having heard them before, and they sounded really damn good to me. like Moka says, it was real percussive. like, they lock down a groove and all these other parts wander in and out, like walking down a street and hearing different songs from open windows that all sync up.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

i have high hopes for the live show given how naturally the songs would stretch out

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 April 2018 03:48 (six years ago) link

This album is doing it for me big time at the moment. The songs have great momentum and all the musical parts seems really integrated into one thing.

Saw him in Copenhagen the other day. It was a cool and very sincere show. Little bit short maybe. He also mentioned our countryman Elias from Iceage had done the backing vocals on Lonely Richard after a night of heavy shroom ingestion.

still listening to this daily. may be aoty. every bassline is just perfection. did anyone ever see em play this material live?

flopson, Monday, 24 December 2018 01:33 (five years ago) link

Saw them in April and again in October, as noted upthread they were so good live in April i bought their new album, never having heard of them before (except seeing this ILX thread title, I assumed they were a metal band).
