Everybody seen this?because it's aaaaaaaawesome I think :-) and I think everybody would think that. It's so nice these MCs rapping live over simple DJ PREMIER beats, nice seeing them react and to some degree hearing audience reactions. Cliché but this is real hiphop and it's really good hiphop.

btw from semtex:

The first ever UK BET Cypher was shot last week by Jak Flash to coincide with the BET Hip-Hop awards.
I was supposed to be on the decks for this, but due to a late return flight from NY I couldn’t make it…..damn you British Airways!

The Cypher features:

CHIPMUNK
WRETCH 32
MIC RIGHTEOUS
MZ BRATT
GFRSH
SMILER
GHETTZ
BIGZ
ROXXXAN
LADY LESHURR
AKALA

P-NASTY (tpp), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 11:09 (six years ago) Permalink

I figure Royce was hillarious and it was great to see Eminem doing his best. Lamarr is so talented and who is this machine gun guy?very nice control. Rick Ross having a good time though the lyrics were prolly mediocre but Busta was just awesome! Chris brown may be a douche but he sure can flow...

I feel like the commenter on premierblog, "Good to see stuff like this get on mainstream TV because that is exactly what the art form of hip hop is and why it changes my blood pressure."

in any even these were pretty okay I guess, i really liked 2 chaaaainz, he had a good mix of dopey NY punchlines ("my credit card is black and proud" !!) and laid back southern swagger. and the MMG one was pretty good, if only for meek mill shouting out gunplay

slaughterhouse one was obv the worse for having the worst smug rappers.

ross is one of the best rappers out right now and he can actually get an album out w/ no bullshit, which puts him in the class of like... five rappers

lots of ppl who don't give 2 shits about 90s ny rap in reality understand that it is 'worthy canonized serious music' now the way ppl fetishize dated concepts of 'soul' and thus pay deference to it in writing even if they dont actually know the diff between leaders of the new school & kwame

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:45 (six years ago) Permalink

what does any of this really mean. D-40 feels me tho

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:45 (six years ago) Permalink

My point is there is a machine in place via labels/mags/blogs that says 364 days a year people want shitty pop rap; and then once a year there's this REALLY POPULAR FEATURE on the BET Awards that is literally the only thing anyone knows about the BET awards where everyone acts like backpacker nerdballs and this is supposedly really novel and interesting and thrilling. And it's like, if people like this--WHICH THEY CLEARLY DO--why don't we reward people for rapping all year instead of like drowning everything in dipshitty Alex Da Kid Glee rap and Bruno hooks and hashtags

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:50 (six years ago) Permalink

that's like saying "i see so many people excited on the internet about arcade fire playing on snl, why don't they sell more records than nickelback? it's a conspiracy man"

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:51 (six years ago) Permalink

you are so fucking infuriating

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:52 (six years ago) Permalink

the charts have been democratized -- the machinery may want LMFAO to dominate the airwaves but the fact of the matter is people are going to iTunes and buying that shit in droves, afaik there's no way to fake that

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:53 (six years ago) Permalink

like if you actually want people to poke holes in your incoherent swiss cheese 'argument' then post it here, if you just want people to agree and say yeah you're totally right man then uh go join all the other people on twitter who think skillz should be on bet every day

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:54 (six years ago) Permalink

If you can't see that entertainment industry understanding the appeal of """indie culture""" like Arcade Fire is why we have shit like Juno and Two Broke Girls and Dude Where's My Pants, then you are are even more clueless than your fake avuncular act makes you appear to be on ILX

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:55 (six years ago) Permalink

Gosh why do twitter people say great things about burgeoning indie stars like Eminem and Busta Rhymes

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:57 (six years ago) Permalink

maybe the shaky analogy i'm looking for is people freaking out about prince's "while my guitar gently weeps" solo when it's been how many years since a top 10 hit even had a guitar solo -- i mean excitement displays of virtuosity probably gets even stronger when that particular type of skill falls out of favor in popular music

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 04:06 (six years ago) Permalink

i think that's a good analogy, and just like these freestyles, no one really thinks it would work on the radio. not that people don't want to hear a great verse or a great guitar solo within the context of a hit, but pointed chops showcases like these makes for better internet videos than pop music.
