Don't Call It a Scumbag - Nu Crusty in 2K11

Peace to the Frank Turner thread, but I just heard some terrible gobshites called The King Blues on the radio and in the 20 seconds before I cd throw the set on the floor and stomp it, I thought "oh shit this is a thing again isn't it?"

So who else is representing for dog-on-a-string urban protest, hyper-diluted punk stylings and jesus-awful poetry in the 2010s? There's our Frank, obv, plus these King Blues nobs, plus that dude that did that song about somebody dying of a smack overdose - Ed Sheeran is it? - i had to look the cunt up. Is stuff like Professor Plum the lol grime wing of this, um, movement? Is this thing? How can we stop it?

On the road footage? Check. References to "the Common Man"? Check. A bit like Big Country without the bagpipe noises? You betcha.

Sounds more like the bastard offspring of the Ordinary Boys and the Levellers. What compassionate deity would ever permit such a tryst?

and sat trying to think about an ILM thread I could justifiably revive to share my annoyance

now there is one

In America its all dudes with giant stretched earlobes that look like Hot Water Music but want to be Jeff Magnum

Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 7 November 2011 13:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i came across some of the Americans while i was looking for UK examples this morning. anyway this is obviously happening so they can all go in here, wherever they come from.

Saw King Blues at a festival two or three years ago. Oik-ish shout-a-long cheeky-monkey anarcho-squat fuck-the-pigs shit-in-a-bean-can folksy ska punk iirc. Terrible and yet oddly fascinating to watch.

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Monday, 7 November 2011 13:43 (twelve years ago) link

lol i thought Karl Phillips was "rapping" in Dutch for the first minute there. awesome "punch me in the face" face he pulls at the start.

I expect to see this on a sticker on their next albums

yeah at any given moment i'm sure lots of these kinds of acts are playing 25th on the bill at yr local provincial Peace Festival, but now in these grisly economic times they're bringing their message of hope and resistance to the mainstream.

Bond 23: Skyrim (Noodle Vague), Monday, 7 November 2011 13:45 (twelve years ago) link

There's probably lots of these sorts of band in Greece

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 7 November 2011 13:46 (twelve years ago) link

that'll kickstart their economy

Karl Phillips & The Midnight Ramblers - from the moment chipmunk raises his eyebrow to the bit where that tuppenny-bit fortune teller starts wailing and prodding the screen with her fake nails, it just gets worse and worse and worse until it reaches a nadir of all culture. If the world ends by the time this song is over, I won't be surprised. It's like when Cartman sees a family with butts for heads and can't find anything funny any more. I think I'm ready to embrace Mick Hucknall.

Also LOL at badly mimed guitar solo at the end.

there's a good thread here somewhere which is basically 100 or so posts of clowning some well-meaning US folk-punk melonheads

I can't remember what they were called though and 'folk punk' and 'bike punk' aren't getting me results

We All Had Guess Papers (DJ Mencap), Monday, 7 November 2011 13:56 (twelve years ago) link

are you guys really getting this stuff on pop (using the definition very loosely there) radio? as i said on the dedicated frank turner thread, most of these doobers are trapped in the negative zone of public radio/the internet over here.

(if so, i am so sorry.)

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 7 November 2011 14:13 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think Turner's charted yet? I am massively out of touch basically. The King Blues were being plugged on a national radio station this morning, and some of the grime/hip hop inflected horrors are getting serious chart action. In some enlightened dictatorships this

that first one is kinda worth it just for the "SEND EEN THE CLOWNS" line.

scott seward, Monday, 7 November 2011 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

other than that i'm just gonna ignore this thread. i don't really wanna know. still plenty of good crst-pnk and crst-grnd out there though.

scott seward, Monday, 7 November 2011 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

of course. Crusty as a tag in the UK doesn't come from crust-punk tho as far as i know

oh okay nevermind then. i'm old.

scott seward, Monday, 7 November 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

wait no its the same kind of thing though...

okay i'm confused. i mean crust punk and crusties go together...

here anyway. anywhere really.

I'm kinda with Scott on this one. Here's an excellent antidote to all the horribleness in this thread - Resistant Culture, a Native American grind/crust-punk band from L.A.:

Bond 23: Skyrim (Noodle Vague), Monday, 7 November 2011 15:45 (twelve years ago) link

Just ask yourself, is it Oik-ish shout-a-long cheeky-monkey anarcho-squat fuck-the-pigs shit-in-a-bean-can folksy ska punk or isn't it Oik-ish shout-a-long cheeky-monkey anarcho-squat fuck-the-pigs shit-in-a-bean-can folksy ska punk, if it isn't Oik-ish shout-a-long cheeky-monkey anarcho-squat fuck-the-pigs shit-in-a-bean-can folksy ska punk then it doesn't belong on this thread.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 7 November 2011 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

tbf i wasn't happy with the term "Nu Crusty", the shit we were talking about at first needs its own label

True crusties died along with the b/w photocopier.

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Monday, 7 November 2011 15:51 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I gotta say "crusty" to me means Crass, Dirt, Amebix, Life Cycle, A.P.P.L.E., Hellbastard, Deviated Instinct, that kinda thang

the politics are maybe the same but to me it's a defined (bastard) genre of lefty punk rock

also . . . oh god fuck you Ed Sheeran, "crumbling like pastries"? really?

the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

pastries should be flaky or gtfo

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Monday, 7 November 2011 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

the only reason 'crusty' has a different def'n in the UK is because there were one or two bands in the early 90s who went mnstrm with it, despite having roots in more or less the same community as the (British) bands Drew listed there

We All Had Guess Papers (DJ Mencap), Monday, 7 November 2011 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

that is to say, none of these people are crust punx but they do summon the spectre of the Levellers for those of a certain age, ie every Brit posting itt

We All Had Guess Papers (DJ Mencap), Monday, 7 November 2011 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

oh yeah, I remember seeing lots of people in Levellers t-shirts when I studied in the Uk in the mid-90s- gotcha- never heard any of their music tho (busy raving)

the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

A lot of crusties were just grebos with worse haircuts iirc.
