Do you think you expect too much from music and musicians?

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 14 September 2002 07:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, and consequently I enjoy very little of it.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 14 September 2002 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

And what do you expect, I should have said.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 14 September 2002 07:57 (twenty-three years ago)

The whole expectation thing fizzled out for me years ago. I guess, I would have wanted to hear newness and been inspired, now that doesn't seem as important, or I'm more likely to get that from books or films.

I think it's part of the aging process that music will invariably seem to follow the law of diminishing returns, as prolonged listening and experience tends to jade the ear. It becomes harder to capture the wide-eared wonder one initially felt when they first heard _______ (insert favorite artist here). In the same way certain folks felt let down after each subsequent bloated Star Wars prequel failed to immediately transport them magically back to their youth, music may eventually lose its power to galvanize an individual, after that individual as become gradually immune to the shock of the new and start saying things like, "yeah, Interpol are fine, but they're just ripping off Joy Division,....aahhhhh, now THERE was a band!" etc. etc.

it depends what I'm listening to, so if I'm listening to say, 18 th century classical, then not too much as I don't know that much abt it, but if i am to buy more and more recs there will come a time when I will know what's good or not and I will have certain expectations.

But it's always good not to expect too much, to know what you like becuz that leaves out the mavericks, the ppl who did things differently, ppl who change the boundaries of 'what is allowed?'.

Don't know if i have answered the question actually, maybe i have.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 14 September 2002 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose it seems like stock non commital answer but I don't think I have any set expectations really. I think if I allowed myself to set limits I might enjoy a lot less stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 September 2002 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i mainly hung out w.musicians in my youth and consequently expect very little of them haha (except music obv): however i am utterly and endlessly fascinated by music because it's something i can't really "do" (i mean, i was in orchestras and choirs and bands back then and can read stavemusic and stuff, but i always felt i was on the outside looking in: doing it with my head not my fingers), and that there's stuff going on i don't "get"

(it may be a reason why i'm so often embattled on ILM on behalf of nitwit chartpop playas actually, against halfwit critics attacking them: because i look at what the critic is doing — writing — and feel, "i totally know what yr doing, i understand THIS world" and then i look at the playas and feel "and that i can't do and nevah cd"...)

I've come to the conclusions that I don't expect that much because I'm fairly easily impressed by music (one of Skykicking's main flaws is probably its endless OTT enthusiasm).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 14 September 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't been excited by a new band for absolutely fucking ages. I think it's the fact that as soon as a band show any sign of talent nowadays, they're rammed down our throats like semen. Everyone likes to feel there early with a band, and the only option you get for that nowadays is with shite bands.

you've been listening to the evening session Dom.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 14 September 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim, if enthusiasm be a flaw...!

I expect lots from music & musicians - as we should.
most music sets its sights way too low.
having said that, I'll give almost anything a chance.
