French dream-pop outfit Air are set to release an album on February 7 through Astralwerks, their first since 2009's Love 2. Titled Le Voyage Dans La Lune after Georges Méliès' 1902 silent short French film by the same name, it's an expansion of a project they worked on earlier this year. (The duo provided music for an updated version of Méliès' film for its debut at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.)
The record features lyrics and vocals from Beach House's Victoria Legrand on a song called "Seven Stars" and lyrics written by Au Revoir Simone on the track "Who Am I Know? The release will include a limited-edition version of the short film and Air's original score.

interesting choice for vocalists. victoria legrand (who sounds great) has a famous french uncle and au revoir simone have a campy french name.
also streaming on npr until release date http://www.npr.org/2012/01/24/145761308/first-listen-air-le-voyage-dans-la-lune

OTM about Virgin Suicides, but I'm not feeling this one at all. It's so mediocre. Why o why have these talented young fellows made such mediocre records after Virgin Suicides? There wasn't even an album that truly bombed or was way out there, I would have respected that. But not this, it's so nothingy, I can't stand it. I feel they are capable of making a brilliant record but perhaps I am wrong about that.

This is so great

Bateau OTM. The track with Legrand is good but there's a huge drop off in quality after that. Just standard Air stuff mostly.

not otm, it's lovely. not so ponderous as they have been in the past. maybe that is a problem for some?

just standard air stuff? lol what does that mean? this review made me laugh as well...

anyway, i love everything air have done up until 10,000hz. just never searched out anything after that. this record is fucking grand though. listened to it about 10 times last weekend. there are some real "grown up" moments on it, i like how they're real masters of what they do now. total synth porn, really cosmic, kitsch, adventurous with their harmony, love the timpani and the drum sounds, some sick sick bass sounds. good job well done etc this rec is def a keeper for me

one year passes...

le voyage came up in the datf punk thread, and since this thread seems to have languished...

dig this album a lot. seems a shame that it wasn't more widely heard & embraced, but maybe that's inevitable, given that it's a brief soundtrack to a somewhat obscure silent film. just a little over 30 minutes, with only a two "real songs".

but so what? it's great! trippy, varied, and though clearly indebted to psychedelic 60s soundtracks, it isn't so derivative as to seem trapped in amber. tbh, i like the slightness, that it doesn't stretch to fill time or make a big statement. just a series of pleasantly cosmique distractions, sometimes jubilant, sometimes ominous, always intriguing.

I once interviewed one of the Air guys, and he kept apologizing for his English, which of course was beyond good. Eventually, I told him he should just start affecting the world's fakest, most exaggerated French accent, just to adhere to expectations.
